Job Description - RN with IV sedation certification

Summit Interventional Radiology is the first full-range, independent interventional radiology practice in Austin dedicated to providing excellent patient care and outcomes. By focusing only on minimally invasive management of a variety of conditions, Dr. Smith has developed the skillset and protocols to best serve the needs of his patients.



Core privileges include anesthetic management before, during, and after a medical procedure or surgery by performing a patient assessment, preparing the patient for anesthesia, administering and maintaining the anesthesia to ensure proper sedation and pain management, overseeing patient recovery from anesthesia, and caring for the patient's immediate postoperative needs.


The registered nurse is authorized and therefore skilled in delivering comprehensive pain management and anesthesia care to patients. All the accepted anesthetic techniques and modalities, including intravenous sedation or local administration of anesthetic agents, are within the scope of practice.



Responsibilities



Preoperative Care



  • Performing and documenting a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient, including requesting consultations and diagnostic studies; selecting, obtaining, ordering, or administering pre-anesthetic medication and fluids; and obtaining informed consent for anesthesia.

  • Checking the readiness, availability, cleanliness, sterility (when required), and working conditions of all the equipment used in the administration of anesthetic agents prior to administering anesthesia.

  • Developing and implementing a safe anesthetic plan.



Intraoperative Care



  • Selecting, obtaining, or administering the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic, to maintain the patient’s physiologic homeostasis, and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery.

  • Selecting, applying, or inserting appropriate non-invasive monitoring modalities for collecting and interpreting patient physiological data utilizing current standards and techniques.

  • Recommend or request and evaluate pertinent diagnostic studies.

  • Managing and performing all aspects of airway management and pulmonary status using pharmacological support and respiratory therapy.

  • Recognize abnormal patient responses during anesthesia, select and implement corrective action, and request consultation whenever necessary.

  • Managing emergence and recovery from anesthesia by selecting, obtaining, or administering medications, fluids, or ventilatory support in order to maintain homeostasis, to provide relief from pain and anesthesia side effects, or to prevent or manage complications.

  • Evaluate patient response during emergency anesthesia and institute pharmacological or supportive treatment to ensure patient stability during transfer of care.

  • Releasing or discharging patients from a post-anesthesia care area and providing post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care related to anesthesia side effects or complications.

  • Initiating or modifying pain relief therapy through the utilization of drugs, regional anesthetic techniques, or other accepted pain relief modalities.

  • Responding to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.

  • Documentation of patient information, including but not limited to all hemodynamic parameters, interventions, and medication administration in a timely manner.



Post-Anesthesia Care



  • Discharge patients from phase 1/2 and from the post-anesthesia care area.

  • Initiate and administer pharmacological or fluid support of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems in order to meet hemodynamic parameters and adequate ventilation and oxygenation, returning the patient to baseline parameters prior to discharge.


Other



  • Accurate accounting of all controlled substances at the beginning and end of shift with an RN or other healthcare professional.

  • Advising personnel responsible for post-anesthetic care of specific problems presented by the patient's condition.

  • Follow safe clinical procedures and correct non-compliance issues in a professional manner.

  • Submit post-operative reports on the patient's condition and maintain records of anesthetics administered.

  • Assist in the transport of patients.

  • Effective communication with staff.

  • Desire to serve patients and be self-motivated while exhibiting sound judgment, intellectual honesty, appropriate interpersonal skills, and the capacity to react to emergencies in a calm and reasonable manner.

  • Excellent bedside manner, emotional stability, and the ability to make decisions in emergencies.

  • Respect for others, which I am posting now; adherence to the concepts of privilege and confidentiality in communicating with patients; and a commitment to the patient’s welfare are essential attributes.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills.

  • Excellent judgment.

  • The ability to contribute in a team environment and to provide excellent customer service.


Requirements:



  • Registered Nurse licensing and sedation certification are required.

  • EMR proficiency required.

  • Professional liability insurance coverage issued by a recognized company and of a type and in an amount equal to or greater than the limits established by the governing body.

  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
