Job Description - Roadway Design Engineer I/II

We’re looking for a skilled Civil Engineer to join our expanding Roadway/Highway design team in Kansas City at our Overland Park office. The ideal candidate for this role will be an EIT with experience working on local agency and/or DOT roadway design projects. Lochmueller Group is a multi-state engineering consulting firm with an emphasis on infrastructure.  We provide multi-disciplined services for a variety of public agencies and private entities, including transportation design; water resources design; environmental analysis & permitting; construction engineering & inspection; traffic engineering & transportation planning; surveying; and land acquisition & appraisal. Our Roadway/Highway Design team is involved in a wide variety of street, roadway, highway and multi-modal transportation design projects for local public agencies and state DOT’s.

In this position, the candidate will:


  • Prepare preliminary design plans, documents, and specifications under the guidance of senior engineers.

  • Conduct analyses and perform standard computations, drawings, and visual aids for projects.

  • May coordinate work with entry-level engineers, technicians, or other staff.

  • Collaborate with the design team to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Conduct field inspections to gather relevant data and contribute to site assessments.

  • Utilize design software and tools for drafting and modeling.

  • Support the development of cost estimates for projects.

  • Perform quality control self-checks of assigned work.

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications for this role:


  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field from an ABET accredited civil engineering program.

  • Passed FE/EI exam

  • 1-3+ years of relevant roadway design engineering experience

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation

  • Strong understanding of  design principles and standards

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work individually or as part of a team
