Job Title: ROTC Instructor

Position Function: To plan, teach, and evaluate instruction in JROTC subjects and provide appropriate educational opportunities and extracurricular activities for students to include character education and service learning. Teaches, advises, and coaches JROTC cadets to assist them in reaching their full potential. Maintains a viable JROTC program with a minimum enrollment of 100 students.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

• Administers the high school JROTC program in accordance with the applicable military service regulations and district policies
• Administers a multi-subject four-year JROTC curriculum to include\: planning, organizing and instructing JROTC education classes; organizing a curriculum model to complement school curriculum; developing annual, weekly and daily training schedules for curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular instruction, training, and activities; developing course syllabus for four distinct JROTC courses; writing/updating daily lesson plans; participating in courses of instruction or district in-service training designed to improve instructional methods; teaching four separate levels of JROTC courses; evaluating student performance and maintaining grades; performing all other requirements routinely performed by classroom teachers
• Maintains military and school property as directed by the applicable military service directorate and district to include\: managing and supervising of all logistical areas such as requisitioning of government furnished supplies, equipment, uniforms, textbooks, and training aids; maintaining training aids, curriculum, devices, equipment and uniforms valued at $90,000+; maintaining accountability and serviceability of all issued property to include 100% annual inventories; Coordinating with school personnel to ensure the proper accountability of school activity funds and property; maintaining accountability of service and school funds averaging $15,000 annually
• Promotes the growth of the program by\: establishing rapport and working with high school and middle school counselors and faculty members; establishing contact with civic groups to obtain their recognition and support of the JROTC program; maintaining a cooperative relationship with parents/guardians; counseling students about the benefits of JROTC with the aim to enroll and keep students in the program; informing JROTC cadets, parents and students at large about military-related scholarship opportunities; assisting students with applications and filing; planning and conducting co-curricular and extracurricular activities to include Color guards, drill teams, orienteering teams, raider challenge teams, participation in field trips and competitive events; supervising JROTC cadets at leadership camps, orientation trips, adventure training, fund raising and other extra-curricular activities
• Participation in the following district events\: Wichita City League Drill Competition, Veterans Day Ceremony National Awards Ceremony, Monthly JROTC Instructors Meetings, Honorary Cadet Selection Program
• Completes annual Continuous Growth Plan in accordance with the district Staff Quality Improvement System
• Plans, organizes, and directs JROTC unit organization
• Maintains liaison with the appropriate service branch by attending conferences and workshops when requested and keeps current on changes and developments within the service branch to include logistics, finances, and academic areas. Attends monthly district JROTC meetings
• Meets deadlines and submits required military service and district reports
• Accepts assignments related to JROTC as requested by the building principal and the district JROTC Director

Additional Duties: Assists with additional duties as assigned by the building principal or JROTC Director.

Equipment: This position may require the ability to use SMART boards and iPads in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Employees must always comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands:

• Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend, twist balance, stoop, climb steps, reach overhead, lift up to 20 pounds
• Works in a classroom environment with requirements for outdoor activities such as drill, physical training, community support activities, fund raisers, etc

• Ability to communicate both verbally and written in order to communicate with others inside and outside of the organization for the purpose of giving and obtaining information
• Ability to communicate effectively with a Supervisor when their discretion is needed
• Ability to perform as an effective team player within the school and the district Leadership program
• Ability to plan, organize, make decisions and prioritize work to meet the daily demands of the building

Interrelations:

• Contact with personnel within the district and with students, parents, and vendors
• Will be working under the direct supervision of the building principal and Leadership/ JROTC Director in order to complete day to day tasks
• Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy
• Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
• Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

• In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave
• Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator
• All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position

Qualification Profile:

• Retired Commissioned Officer, Warrant Officer, or Non-Commissioned Officer as required by the vacant position
• Certified as a JROTC instructor by appropriate military service
• Baccalaureate degree (for Commissioned or Warrant Officers) or Associates degree (for Non-Commissioned Officers)
• Must maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License throughout employment

FLSA Status: Exempt
