Job Description - Sacramento Correspondent

We’re looking for a reporter to break news and find scoops on the biggest tax stories in California and on the West Coast. You’ll write daily articles and enterprise diving into the legal and regulatory changes driving tax policy and the implications for companies and individuals. You’ll build sources across industries and the regulatory space and collaborate with reporters and editors from California to Washington DC. California is the world’s fourth-largest economy, and tax stories are at the heart of it. This is your chance to write stories with real-world impact.

What you will do:

  • Report and write news articles and breaking news alerts, often on deadline. 

  • Cover news as it happens, live and in person, including at courthouses, state legislatures, and other strategic locations within your assigned region.

  • Pitch, develop and write analytical pieces and feature stories on complicated subjects like tax and legal developments, making them accessible to readers 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of federal and state legislative, regulatory, and judicial processes. 

  • Establish strategic relationships with sources, editors, news desk, etc. etc. 

  • Serve as a resource for other correspondents and Washington based reporters. 

  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.   

You need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in English or journalism preferred. 

  • 3-7 years’ experience in journalism, including daily reporting experience or demonstrated reporting proficiency and news judgment. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of journalism principles and techniques.

  • Knowledge of federal and state legislative, regulatory, and judicial processes. 

  • The ability to cover events live as they happen and meet with sources in person within the location being covered.   

In compliance with local pay transparency laws, The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $90,000 annually. Final compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
