Job Description - Safety & Risk Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY 


The Safety & Risk Coordinator is responsible for leading Vallejo Company's day-to-day safety program by partnering with executive leadership, operations, Human Resources, and Safety Plus. This position combines field leadership, risk management, employee engagement, and regulatory compliance to create a safe, productive, and efficient work environment.



The successful candidate will not be expected to build every program from scratch. Instead, they will leverage the Safety Plus platform and external safety resources to implement best practices, maintain compliance, and continuously improve Vallejo's safety culture.

  • Understands the realities of heavy highway and underground utility construction.

  • Can communicate effectively with operators, laborers, foremen, superintendents, project managers, and executive leadership.

  • Builds trust through consistency, fairness, and practical decision-making.

  • Believes safety and production can work together.

  • Enjoys coaching employees rather than simply enforcing rules.

  • Is comfortable using technology to improve efficiency.

  • Wants to grow professionally as Vallejo continues to expand.





SAFETY PROGRAM SUPPORT


The Safety & Risk Coordinator will be supported by the Safety Plus safety management platform and external safety advisors.


This support includes:



  • OSHA documentation and reporting tools.

  • Employee training management.

  • Incident tracking.

  • Inspection and audit management.

  • Corrective action tracking.

  • Policy templates.

  • Regulatory resources.

  • Technical safety guidance.


This allows the Coordinator to focus on:



  • Field leadership.

  • Employee engagement.

  • Hazard identification.

  • Incident prevention.

  • Coaching.

  • Continuous improvement.



WORKING KNOWLEDGE



  • OSHA Construction Standards 

  • Excavation and trenching

  • Heavy equipment operations

  • Utility construction

  • Traffic control

  • Lockout/Tagout

  • Fall protection

  • Hazard communication

  • Incident investigation


Experience with all standards is not required. Candidates with strong heavy civil construction safety experience and a willingness to continue learning are encouraged to apply.



QUALIFICATIONS


Required:



  • 5–8 years of safety experience in heavy civil, heavy highway, underground utility, or industrial construction.

  • Strong understanding of construction safety principles and OSHA requirements.

  • Experience working with union workforces is highly preferred.

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Ability to travel between local jobsites.


Preferred:



  • OSHA 30 Construction (required or ability to obtain within six months).

  • Experience with safety management software (Safety Plus, KPA, HCSS Safety, etc.).

  • CHST, ASP, or similar certification is a plus—but not required.

  • Experience partnering with HR on workers' compensation, onboarding, and return-to-work programs.
