Purpose Statement
The job of Safety and Transportation Official serves the purpose of providing support to the educational program with specific responsibilities for the safety, transportation and welfare of students during classroom and non-classroom activities; minimizing the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents; communicating observations and/or incidents that have a potential impact on the general well-being of students, school personnel, and/or visitors; operate a student transportation vehicle over designated routes within an established time schedule; to transport students to and from school and on special event trips; to perform daily inspections of the transportation equipment; to support meal distribution, as needed and to do other related work as required.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include administering first aid; operating standard office equipment and using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices and procedures; critical observation; enforcing discipline policies; enforcing rules and regulations; handling hazardous materials; investigating problems; and utilizing appropriate physical and mechanical restraint.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, present information to others, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include methods of investigation; recordkeeping; cultural differences within the student population; job-related codes, laws, rules, regulations, and policies; chain of custody of confiscated items including contraband; community resources; and best practices to ensure school safety and security. Safe driving practices and techniques; Safety and maintenance requirements of pupil transportation equipment.
ABILITY is required to work with specific, job-related data; utilize and maintain a variety of job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances and work with data utilizing specific, defined processes. Problem-solving is required to identify issues and create action plans; independently interpreting data to establish effective protocols. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; diffusing argumentative behavior; and working some evenings and weekends. Drive student transportation equipment safely and efficiently. Maintain appropriate student behavior in a transportation vehicle.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under direct supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; maintaining a professional environment around students, staff and visitors; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 75 pounds of force; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes (e.g., hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy) and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and requires the ability to climb up and down stairs of two or more floors on a regular basis.
Experience
Any combination of experience and training working with youth and adolescents that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Equivalency
Targeted job-related education with study in a job-related area.
Certificates
CPR/First Aid Certification Valid California Driver’s License
PC 832.2/SB1626 Training Certification (SB 390 Training Certification as of 7/1/21)
