Job Description - Safety Coordinator

The Opportunity:


West Liberty University is seeking applications for a Safety Coordinator.  The Safety Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety programs across the institution. This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards, promotes a culture of safety, and coordinates incident response, reporting, and prevention efforts. The Safety Coordinator serves as the primary liaison for insurance matters, regulatory inspections, and campus-wide safety initiatives.


 


Essential Functions of the position: 



  • Incident Management & Reporting

    • Oversee and manage all campus incident reporting processes, ensuring timely and accurate documentation.

    • Investigate incidents, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.

    • Maintain records and prepare reports for internal leadership and external agencies as required.


    Insurance, Inspections & Regulatory Coordination

    • Serve as the primary point of contact for general liability insurance, including claims coordination and communication with carriers.

    • Act as the main campus liaison for all safety-related inspections.

    • Prepare for, accompany, and follow up on inspections, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.

    • Track and ensure timely resolution of any deficiencies identified during inspections.


    Inspections & Preventative Maintenance

    • Conduct monthly preventative maintenance and safety inspections across all campus buildings.

    • Identify hazards, code violations, and maintenance needs.

    • Communicate findings to Facilities Services and monitor completion of corrective actions.


    Safety Committees & Emergency Response

    • Organize and lead Safety Committee meetings, including agenda development, documentation, and follow-up actions.

    • Facilitate Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) meetings and support emergency preparedness planning.

    • Assist in the development, implementation, and review of emergency response procedures.


    Training & Education

    • Develop and deliver safety training programs for faculty, staff, and students.

    • Coordinate required retraining and maintain training records.

    • Promote awareness of safety policies and best practices across campus.


    Laboratory & Chemical Safety Support

    • Collaborate with the College of Science on chemical safety protocols and compliance.

    • Assist with proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials.

    • Support laboratory inspections and safety training initiatives.


    Budget Management

    • Manage and monitor the safety program budget.

    • Track expenditures and recommend cost-effective safety improvements.





Education & Experience Requirements: 






      • OSHA certification (e.g., OSHA 30-hour General Industry or equivalent).

      • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Risk Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).

      • Experience in safety coordination, risk management, or environmental health and safety (EHS).

      • Strong knowledge of safety regulations, inspection processes, and compliance standards.

      • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.





    Preferred:





      • Experience in a higher education or campus environment.

      • Familiarity with laboratory safety and chemical hygiene practices.

      • Certification such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager).
