The Position


Marcus Construction is looking for a strong leader with the autonomy and decision-making skills to champion our proactive safety culture by leading and enforcing safety policies across multiple construction projects  and maintain our impeccable safety record. The Safety Manager is responsible to develop, implement, and manage our EHS programs and ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and internal regulations and  standards. The role focuses on instilling a culture of safety and sustainability across all construction sites and corporate operations. All activities will be performed in support of the strategy, vision and values of the Company.



Essential Job Functions



  • Lead by example to ensure that all employees and subcontractors follow these safety requirements





    • Abide by and apply OSHA and all mandated and practical safety and construction procedures, methods, and standards to every building, every day

    • Maintain and operate construction equipment and hand tools in a safe and proper manner

    • Proper use of company provided safety and hazard awareness training programs

    • Work with crew members in a safe, productive, and enjoyable work environment treating everyone with dignity and respect



  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures

  • Manage projects and identify key issues in moderately complex situations

  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings with project stakeholders online and in the field

  • Provide leadership in quality process, safety, and accident prevention programs



  • Document results of all safety findings, project updates, discipline warnings and maintain job site specific safety administrative files and records



  • Review and understand equipment budgets and negotiate rental rates

  • Mentor and coach construction personnel, fostering a positive and productive work environment that instills safety best practices and risk awareness


      ·    Conduct regular safety audits of construction projects



  • Monitor and manage the use, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials


    • Identify, document and recommend abatement of hazardous/potentially hazardous conditions

    • Issue reports to field superintendent and project management staff detailing hazards and abatement techniques

    • Follow up with the superintendent to ensure safety issues were abated in a timely manner

    • Conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, permits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards




       ·   Compile safety-related statistics and trends, interpret government policies and recommendations, write up incident and discipline reports, recommend changes and work closely with department managers regarding training and discipline issues


       ·   Work closely with external insurance companies to report and manage safety-related claims and assist in monitoring medical treatment of injured employees



  • Serve as the point of contact for regulatory agencies during inspections or investigations, document, provide corrective/preventive action implementation and follow-up to ensure compliance

  • Lead accident and incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action implementation and follow-up to document findings

  • Source and provide in-person and virtual training sessions for employees, supervisors, and subcontractors on safety protocols, hazardous materials use and storage, hazard communication, emergency response, and environmental regulations


       ·   Ensure proper training recordkeeping and retention



  • Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, design partners, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure safety compliance and alignment

  • Drive key initiatives and program development, and contribute to continuous improvement to enhance company safety culture


      ·    Partner with leadership to develop needs assessments, gap analyses and training plans



  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and regulatory compliance

  • Coordinate with site superintendents and project managers to ensure job sites are safe and compliant throughout all project phases

  • Promote continuous improvement in safety practices and performance

  • Champion a strong safety culture and foster employee engagement in safety initiatives



Position Qualifications and Experience



  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or related field preferred. Relevant experience will be considered

  • 3-7 years of construction safety experience required, preferably in the construction industry

  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, DOT, and other applicable regulations

  • OSHA 30 and OSHA 500 or 502 training required

  • First Aid/CPR/BBP and AED training, current to within 2 years

  • Achievement of ASP is required within 2 years of appointment to this position

  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or equivalent certification preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to

    • Understand project scheduling and cost control

    • Read and understand project owner specifications and engineering drawings

    • Meet deadlines and put in the time needed to get the job done

    • Take initiative and work independently as well as part of a team

    • Effectively communicate with team members, owners, subcontractors, and suppliers

    • Embody personal integrity and maintain highly confidential and proprietary information 



  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Preferred technology skills - experience utilizing:


    • Industry-specific software, i.e. Procore, Outbuild, etc.

    • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook)



  • Strong attention to detail, organizational, time management, and problem solving skills

  • Ability to recognize discrepancies and demonstrated research and resolution skills

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance

  • Training required before or after hire date (minimum of 4 hours documented education, exemplify practical knowledge and working experience):





    • Fall protection

    • Scaffolds

    • Excavation

    • Confined space

    • Crane/equipment operations

    • Electrical

    • Incident investigations





Travel: In addition to regional meetings, overnight travel may be involved



Physical Demands/Working Environment


The physical demands described here represent those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, climb stairs and ladders, push/pull, squat, crouch, crawl, and manual dexterity and physical strength to lift and carry heavy objects. Employee must be able to enter the cab of a vehicle that is 3.5 feet (or more) off the ground; be able to sit in the operator’s seat of equipment and safely reach all pedals, switches, levers, buttons, etc. required to safely operate the equipment, and have an adequate field of vision of all instruments, gauges, warning lights, as well as an acceptable field of vision out of the windows and/or mirrors. There will be frequent exposure to moderate, and occasionally loud, noise levels. For safety reasons, the candidate must be able to communicate effectively in this moderate to loud environment. 


 


Work is performed in office settings and on construction job sites which may expose the employee to dirt, dust, uneven surfaces, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures and humidity. In addition, employees must be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and moving around prospective or current project sites. This includes walking on uneven surfaces and walking long distances.
