Job Description
Under supervision, primarily responsible for providing on-site safety support and preventing potential regulatory violations and penalties at the new Central Chemical Intake Facility, providing input and guidance on chemical inventory management activities, overseeing hazardous materials shipping and receiving policies and procedures for the university community, and providing virtual and in-person training and consultation for all chemical inventories, hazardous materials and dangerous goods shipments. The position will ensure compliance with international and domestic shipping regulations, including 49 CFR172.1172.804 and 49 CFR173.115173.140 as well as Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) 5.0 standards.

Essential Duties
* Ensures incoming and outgoing hazardous materials shipments are properly processed.
* Ensures the proper setup and implementation of accurate chemical container barcoding and real-time inventorying of hazardous materials at ASU laboratories, shops, and other chemical storage locations.
* Ensures accurate inventory and accuracy of storage management systems for hazardous materials (including but not limited to biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive and potentially radioactive substances.)
* Develops, implements, and monitors chemical inventory systems to ensure regulatory compliance and incident prevention.
* Performs inventory management related functions and initiating hazardous materials minimization efforts, yearly physical inventories, and reporting.
* Develops and implements procedures and training presentations for staff responsible for hazardous materials chemical intake and personnel managing chemical inventories.
* Develops and coordinates the ASU Chemical Inventory and Dangerous Goods Shipping Program.
* Responsible for handling hazardous material and preparing shipping documentation and packaging requirements.
* Develops safe transport protocols for campus chemical distribution and facilitates training programs to ensure faculty, staff and students properly package, ship and transport hazardous materials.
* Prepares inventory reports by collecting and analyzing chemical inventory information.
* Monitors and reports EHS leadership about specific chemical inventories, including but not limited to Department of Homeland Security Chemicals of Interest, Controlled Substances, Particularly Hazardous Chemicals, and other chemicals of concern; inform EHS leadership when quantities may be reaching regulatory thresholds.
* Ensures the development and implementation of any security requirements necessary to prevent theft, vandalism, or releases and to comply with Department of Homeland Security Regulations.
* Coordinates activities associated with chemical inventory inspections, assessments, and consultations for the department in coordination with senior management and subject matter experts.
* Conducts site visits to audit, provide consultation and inspections of university facilities using hazardous materials to ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements.
* Develops and implements pollution prevention programs and sustainability activities to support university goals.
* Interprets and ensures effectiveness of specific methodology and key performance indicators for the department including the effectiveness of safety education.
* Investigates and remediates problems with the safe and legal handling of hazardous materials.
* Communicates with customers on safety-related matters.
* Reviews accuracy of reports for environmental and safety programs ensuring federal, state, and local regulatory requirements are satisfied.
* Serves as a member of the department emergency response team and participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies.
* Develops pollution prevention and sustainability education programs.
* Updates and maintains Standard Operating Procedures.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
* Drives Arizona State University leased, owned or rented vehicles and carts to various ASU locations to perform work.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in physical sciences and four (4) years of related experience Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
* Evidence of a Bachelors degree in chemistry or physical science.
* Experience in hazardous material handling.
* Experience with chemical inventory management.
* Training in spill containment, IATA, DOT, IMDG and OSHA Right to Know.
* Experience working in chemical, pharmaceutical, or other wet laboratories.
Working Environment
* Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
* Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
* Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
* Works in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme weather conditions; hot in summer and cold in winter
* Participates in respiratory protection program; assists with respiratory fit testing and training.
* Participates in ASU medical surveillance programs, which may include vaccinations.
* Employee must possess a valid US Drivers license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
