JOB DESCRIPTION

Bridges to Readiness is looking for SAT Math virtual tutors to support high school students in reaching college readiness benchmarks. As a tutor, you will work 1:1 with anywhere from one to 10 students for at least 3+ hours a week on the content, mindsets, and skills needed to succeed in college-level math. For our summer programming, you must be available to tutor June 5- Jul 17, 2024 and for virtual training in the afternoon/evening (EST) during the last two weeks of May.

Although this program is mostly virtual, we are looking for Indianapolis, Indiana based tutors who are willing to participate in in-person tutoring on June 5, 2024. Participants in this day would complete in person tutoring with the student you are matched with for the rest of the program, as well as help to facilitate or support SAT prep session content (including SAT Overview, Goal Setting, and SAT Format sessions).

 ABOUT BRIDGES TO READINESS

Research shows when students deeply understand core academic content, they are more equipped to persist through postsecondary pathways. However, postsecondary readiness isn’t accessible to all; inequity existed before the pandemic, and the pandemic has exacerbated gaps. In 2020-21, more than one million students—a record high—took the ACT as part of state and district school-day testing. Yet, only 25% of 2021 graduates met all four ACT college readiness benchmarks. And, historically underserved students are less likely to take these assessments; and when they do, their results tend to be lower than their peers. This limits students’ postsecondary opportunities and indicates that they aren’t prepared enough for their future.

The silver lining: rigorous research provides strong evidence that high-dosage tutoring can produce large learning gains for a wide range of students, including those who have experienced learning loss.

At Bridges to Readiness, we believe all students can rise to meet college and career readiness benchmarks, especially when given the right support. Bridges to Readiness exists to advance student preparedness for postsecondary pathways to unlock unlimited futures. Partnering with schools, districts, and other organizations nationwide, we provide high-quality tutoring (Math, English, and ACT/SAT) and instructional experiences for students, and we offer workshops for students and educators around ACT, SAT, English, Math, and postsecondary readiness. Our approach is grounded in students getting access to grade-level, standards-aligned instruction. For English, our curriculum is organized strategically to build knowledge on a variety of high-frequency assessment topics. We use evidence-based instructional methods to scaffold knowledge-building while supporting student comprehension of post-secondary-level syntax and vocabulary. For math, our curriculum is a problem-based approach that focuses on building students’ conceptual understanding of crucial skills correlated to postsecondary academic readiness.

 TUTOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead 3+ hours a week of 1:1 tutoring per week: You will work 1:1 with anywhere from one to 10 students for at least 3+ hours a week on the content, mindsets, and skills needed to succeed in college-level math.
  • Understand the bar for students reaching benchmarks: As tutors, we’re challenged to ensure that students deeply understand the content of the ACT and SAT. To do that, we need to understand concepts, complete sample SAT tasks, and understand the underlying concepts, knowledge, and skills in preparation for the lesson.
  • Communicate with students and parents: We believe in the power of parent communication. After each session, you’ll communicate clear next steps for students and update parents on progress.
  • Track student progress: You’ll be responsible for keeping ongoing progress monitoring data around student understanding of SAT and ACT-level problems.
 QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: A college degree is required.
  • Previous Work Experience: Ideal candidates will be current or prior 6th-12th grade teachers in either English or Math, with track records of success and deep content knowledge. Previous tutoring experience is strongly preferred.

We just expect all tutors to be able to work at least three hours per week. Sessions are one hour long and occur over Zoom.

  • Training and Support: Every tutor goes through advanced training with one of our content area leaders. Standards-based training is one-of-a-kind and unique to Bridges to Readiness. You’ll receive ongoing support to be as effective in your role as possible. Training is paid at a rate of $25 per hour.
  • Technology: Tutors are provided with a Zoom account, an email account, and access to Bridges to Readiness’s materials and resources. (Note: tutors must provide their own computer and WiFi.)
  • Flexible Hours: We work with your schedule to match you with students and tutoring sessions that work for you!
  • Flexible Location: Tutoring will always be virtual (video calls) and students will be based across the country, which means you can be based anywhere, too.

  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: You believe all students can learn and succeed. You’re committed to supporting equity, recognizing disparities in education, employment, and other outcomes shaped by history and still present today. You’re committed to creating inclusive learning environments with your students and partner with their families around their needs and progress.
  • Relationship-Building: We ensure that students have a consistent tutor over time to facilitate positive tutor-student relationships and a stronger understanding of students’ learning needs. You are a relationship-builder with fellow educators, families, and with students.
