Incumbent serves as School Based Youth Liaison for Tippecanoe County Youth Services department, responsible for identifying, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating restorative practices and serving as a resource to local school corporation.
DUTIES:
- Contributes to a positive school culture by making school attendance increase and improving overall learning environment by cooperatively engaging students in restorative justice and evidence based opportunities.
- Provides information and referrals to students, families, and teachers regarding assistance available from community agencies related to mental health services and tutoring.
- Models positive behavior/interactions and communication at all times to foster a sense of good will and knowledge related to juvenile justice system.
- Completes all necessary admission documents and ongoing documentation for participants in educational programming of they qualify for billable services.
- Identifies and implements evidence-based practices to improve school engagement and positive youth development, including decision making, Aggression Replacement Training, Interactive Journaling, Juvenile Jeopardy Game, and assisting with TPECS classes at LSC.
- Assists and/or coordinates and facilitates parent academies, Student Ambassador Program, student success groups, such as organizational skills, social-emotional skill competency or other group sessions, and PowerSchool educational sessions.
- Maintains detailed and accurate record of operation of all evidence-based programming administered.
- Facilitates, at minimum, one ongoing Evidence Based Group at Cary Home for Children for youth referred through Juvenile Probation.
- Facilitates Positive Youth Development and Goal Setting through the Youth Competency Assessment and ensures documentation in reports and Quest.
- Assists in coordinating School Court sessions on a weekly basis per Model, including creating referrals, scheduling school court cases, arranging necessary personnel, monitoring attendance, collecting data, and tracking outcomes.
- Identifies parent engagement opportunities, including after hour education or support sessions and school hour engagement activities.
- Participates and/or facilitates routine meetings and information sharing systems.
- Meets with participant families, including assessing family service needs and referrals and performing follow up procedures to determine compliance with referrals.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Baccalaureate degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related field from an accredited undergraduate program or high school diploma with at least four (4) years of experience in education or juvenile justice system setting. Previous experience with treating children or adolescents and case management.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Ability to meet all department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
- Thorough knowledge of all state and local rules, regulations and policies related to day reporting, and ability to supervise day reporting program.
- Knowledge of services and resources for children and adolescents and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
- Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare detailed reports, including activity reports.
- Knowledge of basic filing systems and ability to maintain accurate and complete department files and records.
- Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
- Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, clients and their families, Deputy Director, probation officers, surveillance officers, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
- Ability to supervise program participants, ensuring compliance, progress and success, and assess and provides interventions for high-risk youths and their families.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computer, calculator, and vehicle.
- Ability to work alone with minimum supervision, and work with others in a team environment.
- Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
- Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.

II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
Incumbent performs the development, supervision, and implementation of treatment plans, through a variety of modalities for an at-risk population. Program participants served may suffer from serious mental, emotional, or behavioral problems. Incumbent utilizes independent judgment when providing crisis intervention to youth and their families. Incumbent may be exposed to irate individuals and/or program participants.
III. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs a variety of duties according to standardized departmental policies and procedures, selecting applicable methods to take authoritative action in response to situational demands. Incumbent plans and arranges own work, referring to supervisor for unusual matters such as policy interpretations. Decisions are always determined by specific instructions, or existing well established policies and procedures. Work is reviewed through attainment of objectives and for soundness of objectives.
IV. PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent maintains communication with co-workers, other County departments, clients and their families, Deputy Director, probation officers, surveillance officers, and the public for purposes of exchanging and explaining information, and making referrals to other organizations.
Incumbent reports directly to the Deputy Director.
V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent performs a variety of duties in a community setting with normal hazards associated with at-risk adolescents, such as verbal abuse, communicable diseases, and potentially violent/hostile individuals. Incumbent's duties involve sitting/walking at will, sitting for long periods, reaching, bending, handling/grasping objects, lifting/carrying object weighing 25-50 pounds, crouching/kneeling, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication.
Incumbent works evenings, occasionally works extended hours, and travels out of town for training, sometimes overnight.
