Job Description - School Safety and Security Coordinator

Job Summary

Rooted in the Mission of the Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) and the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the School Safety and Security Coordinator plays a vital role in fostering a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment where all students can flourish. This leadership position is responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of campus safety, emergency preparedness, and security protocols, while modeling respectful, compassionate engagement with students, staff, families, and visitors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety & Security Leadership

  • Oversee and maintain a comprehensive school safety plan, including policies for emergency scenarios such as lockdowns, evacuations, natural disasters, and threats of violence.
  • Conduct routine risk assessments of campus safety and security, and recommend corrective measures to address vulnerabilities.
  • Manage and maintain security technology and systems, including video surveillance, access control, alarms, and emergency communications tools.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as best practices in school safety.

Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Coordinate schoolwide emergency drills in collaboration with administrators, faculty, and local first responders.
  • Develop and facilitate safety and crisis response training for staff and students, including de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed responses.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with law enforcement, emergency management, and public health agencies.
  • Lead the documentation, investigation, and follow-up of all security-related incidents.
  • Support members of the administration in the investigation of safety reports related to anonymous online reporting, workplace violence prevention, or in-person incidents.  

Campus Supervision

  • Maintain high visibility across all areas of campus, including classrooms, restrooms, hallways, athletic facilities, and parking lots.
  • Provide cross-over training for outsourced security partners and guidance in ensuring appropriate staffing for events and activities. 
  • Proactively build relationships with students and model respectful authority and consistent reinforcement of school rules and expectations.
  • Monitor and guide student behavior during the school day and at after-hours events, fostering an environment of mutual respect and accountability.
  • Provide traffic and parking control as needed to ensure pedestrian and vehicular safety.
  • Support building security, including opening/closing procedures and visitor access management.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Establish and maintain professional, mission-aligned relationships with students, families, faculty, staff, volunteers and visitors.
  • Serve as a campus resource for safety-related concerns or questions and help coordinate supportive interventions in partnership with members of the Executive Leadership Team as needed.
  • Assist with facilities-related tasks as needed and provide support for campus events.

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, emergency management, public safety, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two-five years supervising adolescents in an educational or comparable setting.
  • Prior experience in law enforcement, security services, school safety, or emergency management is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with mental health crisis response or experience collaborating with PERT or similar program is strongly preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods in all weather conditions.
  • Capacity to lift up to 50 pounds and navigate physical tasks (bending, climbing, etc.) as needed.
  • Ability to see, hear, and respond promptly in situations that require vigilance.
  • Work may require early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends.
  • Required to wear a designated uniform during work hours.
  • May occasionally be called upon to provide transportation for students or guests.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and fingerprint clearance.

*OLP will consider qualified applicants with a criminal history pursuant to the California Fair Chance Act.
