ABOUT YOU

You will play a vital role in the lives of our visually impaired students by teaching them to become independent in a sighted world. In teaching visually impaired students you will achieve the goal of a productive, independent graduate by demonstrating flexibility, initiative, a positive attitude, professional maturity, a great work ethic and by teaching lifetime skills in our ever-changing world.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Valid Alabama Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in content area, OR valid certification in another state with ability to obtain reciprocity within six (6) months of hire date. 

• Certified in Visual Impairment or obtain Visual Impairment Certification within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.

• Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction & Curriculum

• Deliver High-Quality Instruction: Teach subject matter in alignment with the Alabama State Department of Education Course of Study.
• Curriculum Development: Design, review, and adapt curricula to meet the unique needs of visually impaired learners.
• Implement the ECC: Stay current on research and teaching strategies within the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) to ensure holistic student development.
• Integrate Assistive Technology: Master and implement specialized technology for the visually impaired to enhance classroom accessibility.

IEP Management & Compliance

• Lead Case Management: Serve as the primary case manager for assigned students, ensuring all educational goals are tracked and met.
• Individualized Education Programs: Facilitate the development, implementation, and regular review of students’ IEPs based on state and curricular guidelines.
• Assessments: Conduct functional vision assessments as needed and assist in the administration of state-mandated testing.
• Confidentiality: Maintain the highest standards of data privacy and protect sensitive student information.

Classroom Leadership & Collaboration

• Foster a Positive Environment: Manage classroom discipline and student behavior with a focus on professional maturity and safety.
• Collaborative Teamwork: Work closely with staff, support personnel, and administration to prioritize the welfare and best interests of every student.
• Supervision: Provide guidance and work cooperatively with assigned teacher aides to ensure a cohesive learning environment.
• Professionalism: Adhere to the professional code of ethics and serve as a consistent role model for students.

Physical Requirements & Engagement

• Student Assistance: Must be physically capable of assisting students with mobility or other needs as required.
• Community Involvement: Participate in extracurricular activities, both on and off-campus, to support student life.

Operational Flexibility:

• Perform other relevant duties as assigned by school administration.

Professional Development & Certification

• Braille Certification: Obtain National Library of Congress Braille Transcriptionist certification within the first 36 months of employment.
• Specialized Training: Complete Orientation and Mobility (O&M) training within the first 12 months.
• Visual Impairment Certification: Secure state Visual Impairment Certification within the first 36 months.
