Job Description - Scientist I (Site Inspection)

At RES, we’re looking for purpose-driven individuals who are passionate about restoration and sustainability, and who want their work to make a lasting environmental impact. Our team members go above and beyond, bringing initiative, integrity, and a strong work ethic to every project. Collaboration is key—we thrive on teamwork, open communication, and diverse perspectives. In a field that constantly changes, we value those who are resilient, adaptable, and resourceful in the face of challenges. If you're intellectually curious, eager to learn, and ready to help restore ecosystems and protect natural resources, you’ll find your place here.

As a Scientist I at RES, you’ll support the RES compliance division with implementation of NPDES program requirements for a variety of transportation, infrastructure, and restoration projects. Working under the direction of experienced scientists and project managers, you’ll perform field inspections of stormwater assets and construction-phase site for environmental compliance, review plans and permits, document compliance, and assist with data compilation and reporting for regulatory programs.

This is an entry-level to mid-level opportunity ideal for someone early in their career with a background in environmental science who is interested in stormwater systems, erosion and sediment control, construction inspection, and regulatory compliance, and who wants to build a strong technical foundation with long-term growth potential.

Projects may include transportation corridors, stormwater treatment systems, wetlands, illicit discharges, outfalls, and active construction sites across the region. Travel to project sites is required, including day trips and occasional overnight travel depending on project needs. See what projects our scientists work on here.

Why You’ll Love This Job

  • You’ll be in the field—not just behind a desk. Conduct inspections of stormwater systems, outfalls, and construction sites while supporting water quality protection.

  • You’ll gain real-world regulatory experience. Learn how Water Management District ERPs, NPDES Phase I & II permits, and stormwater requirements are applied in practice.

  • You’ll develop in-demand inspection skills. Build experience with erosion and sediment control, stormwater BMPs, and environmental compliance documentation.

  • You’ll strengthen your communication skills. Prepare clear inspection reports and coordinate with project teams, contractors, and regulatory staff.

  • Your work will have a direct environmental impact. Your inspections and data help protect surface waters and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations

A Day in the Life

  • Perform field inspections on active construction sites, stormwater facilities, and outfalls in hot and humid conditions, wetlands, rugged terrain, and areas with potential wildlife exposure

  • Inspect stormwater treatment systems, erosion and sediment control measures, and BMPs to ensure compliance with approved plans and permits

  • Conduct inspections required under NPDES Phase I and Phase II MS4 programs, including outfall inspections and illicit discharge screening

  • Verify compliance with Water Management District ERPs, NPDES permits, and stormwater regulations

  • Generate clear, detailed, and accurate field inspection reports, including photographs and written documentation

  • Assist with compiling inspection and monitoring data for NPDES annual reports (Phase I and Phase II)

  • Review construction plans, permits, and specifications related to environmental and stormwater requirements

  • Communicate inspection findings professionally with project managers, contractors, and team members

  • Maintain organized records and support environmental compliance tracking and reporting

We would like to talk to you if you have many of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, geology, natural resources, or a related field

  • 0–2 years of field experience (can include field inspections, internships, academic fieldwork, volunteer work or construction-related environmental work)

  • Basic knowledge of scientific methods, field data collection, safe field practices, and basic plan or permit review.

  • Knowledge of erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, or environmental compliance

  • Familiarity with NPDES permitting, stormwater BMPs, or environmental inspections (academic or professional)

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites

You will thrive in this position if you:

  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills for data documentation and reporting

  • Have attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality data collection and documentation

  • Are reliable, professional, and comfortable working independently in the field

  • Can balance fieldwork with office-based reporting and data management

  • Have strong work ethic and reliability in team-based fieldwork

What would make you stand out?

  • Experience with stormwater treatment systems, outfall inspections, or MS4 programs

  • Background in construction inspection or erosion and sediment control compliance

  • Understanding of Water Management District ERPs, NPDES Phase I or Phase II requirements, or illicit discharge detection

  • FDEP Stormwater, Erosion, and Sediment Control Inspectors Certification (or ability to obtain)

  • Experience with transportation projects or environmental permitting
