Screed Operator

Position Overview:

The Screed Operator is responsible for setting the depth, alignment, and consistency of asphalt during paving operations to ensure a smooth, even finish that meets grade and quality standards. This role works directly with the paving crew and paver operator and plays a critical part in the overall quality of the finished roadway. This is a hands-on position requiring attention to detail, teamwork, and strong awareness of site conditions.

Pay (Albany): $44.09 + Fringe

Starting at $$72.74

Key Responsibilities 

• Operate and control the screed on an asphalt paver to ensure proper depth, width, and grade


• Monitor mat thickness, alignment, and surface consistency throughout paving operations,


• Adjust screed settings (height, slope, crown) as needed to meet project specifications


• Work closely with the paver operator, foreman, and crew to maintain a consistent paving pace


• Assist with setup and teardown of paving equipment at the start and end of shifts


• Perform routine checks and minor adjustments on screed components


• Ensure joints, edges, and transitions are completed cleanly and to standard


• Communicate any issues with material flow, temperature, or equipment performance


• Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work area


• Assist crew with general labor duties as needed when not actively operating

Experience/Education

2+ years of experience working on the back of a paver. Prior experience operating or assisting with screed preferred.

Requirements 

• Strong understanding of paving operations, material flow, and jobsite coordination


• Ability to read grade stakes, string lines, or follow direction for grade control


• Comfortable working in a fast-paced physically demanding environment


• Must be ab le to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in varying weather conditions


• Strong attention to detail and ability to work as part of a team


• Commitment to safety and following company policies at all times.


• Experience with different types of asphalt pavers and screed system preferred


• OSHA 10 certification
