Scrub Tech II

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Scrub Tech II is a professional who assists the operating room team in the care of patients, equipment and supplies.   The Scrub Tech II must be able to anticipate the surgeon’s needs during an operation. The Scrub Tech II must maintain strict sterile technique and follow current guidelines. The Scrub Tech II works under the supervision of the circulating Registered Nurse in the operating room and/or Charge Nurse of the unit. The Scrub Tech II must be a patient advocate.

SCRUB TECH II ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

• This position has no supervisory duties, although the Scrub Tech II is called upon to assist in working with other Technicians new to the facility. The Scrub Tech II conducts functional supervision; overseeing the work as opposed to the worker. The position will have the authority to assign tasks associated with training and direct daily workflow. This position will observe performance, giving feedback as appropriate and may arrange for further training when needed. 
• Serves as a resource to department staff as members of the team as needed.
• Ensures equipment is properly functioning.
• Assists in identifying when service and preventative maintenance of equipment is needed.
• Communicates with Director on patient care, team development and performance improvement efforts.
• Assists in turning over of room, and ensures supplies, instruments, and equipment are returned to proper location. 
• Reports potential performance improvement problems, to coordinators, core nurse and service leader, assists in problem solving. 
• Documents ongoing process of orienting staff and assists in mentoring. 
• Participates in orientation of team members to new equipment and supplies. 
• Is knowledgeable of equipment used in surgical procedures, their, reference manuals, and resources for consultation.
• In addition to meeting the requirement of a Scrub Tech II position, must also be competent to perform as Scrub Tech. 

SCRUB TECH ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

• Demonstrate the ability to assist the physicians with procedures in the operating room and endoscopy suite.
• Provide correct instrumentation and supplies during the procedure.
• Utilize aseptic technique and ensure a safe environment for the patient.
• Follow hospital policies and procedures.
• Utilize time management skills to facilitate the schedule.
• Routinely attends departmental meetings and hospital forums.
• Routinely participates in department projects to continuously improve the department and/or organization.
• Assist co-workers as needed/requested.
• Completion of mandatory department and hospital education.
• Maintain regular and predictable attendance.  
• Perform other essential duties as assigned. 

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS 

• Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program highly preferred.
• Knowledgeable of various surgical procedures.
• Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment. 
• Sterile conscious required.
• Current BLS required.
• Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• 2 years of Operating Room Experience.
• 2 years working at WMMC.
• Attend a Preceptor class within 6 months of this position.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C).

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS 

• Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 10 hours a day. 
• Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard. 
• Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines. 
• Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing. 
• Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition. 
• Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to life and/or carry up to 40 lbs. 
• Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
