Seasonal Botanical Field Technician

Stillwater Sciences is seeking highly motivated and talented junior- to mid-level botanists to join our interdisciplinary staff for on-call positions. We are looking for botanists interested in applying their knowledge of California flora to vegetation projects in Northern California. Positions will be based out of our Arcata office working throughout Humboldt County.

Responsibilities include plant identification, vegetation data collection, photographic monitoring, and data entry. This is an on-call, temporary position. Field efforts are anticipated to be variable in length, potentially up to 50 hours per week starting in April or May and likely extending into August. Most work will be based in the Humboldt Bay area conducting daily vegetation monitoring using transects and quadrants.

The ideal applicant should have:

• Prior field experience; have earned or in the process of earning a BS or BA in botany or similar degree.


• Excellent plant identification skills (Plant Taxonomy or equivalent course; sufficient knowledge of the local flora and familiarity with utilizing the Jepson eFlora and/or the printed Jepson Manual to identify fresh and collected specimens to species).


• Ability to work as part of a team.


• Endurance to work long days in all types of weather and terrain.


• Willingness to travel and work in remote locations (lodging provided) for 7 – 10 days maximum.


• Good attitude and ability to navigate difficult terrain including steep slopes, muddy wetlands with standing water, and extremely dense brush.


• Competency to follow directions and field safety protocols.


• Attention to detail and commitment to sound science.
  

Qualifications:

• Have earned or in the process of earning a BS or BA in Botany or similar degree.


• Ability to traverse difficult terrain including steep slopes, muddy wetlands with standing water, and extremely dense brush.
  


• Solid navigational skills using maps and GPS.


• A valid driver’s license and good driving record and ability to use personal vehicle to travel to field sites (reimbursable).


• Ability to move equipment of 25 pounds or more.

• Hourly rate $24–$29 depending on qualifications or experience.


• Temporary on-call positions based out of Arcata, CA for fieldwork throughout northern California.


• Must live in the United States and possess a valid work authorization.
