 Position Summary: Oversee the physical health of campers and staff, including the administration of medication and first aid services. Partner with campers, families, and counselors to provide the resources, training, and skills necessary for campers to be successful while at camp. Uphold all policies, procedures, and safety standards to ensure the wellbeing of all campers. Be an active participant in campers’ experience and camp community.  This seasonal full-time position is needed at Chinook Program Center in Waukesha, WI. Availability for position is needed for five weeks: 6/9-6/20, 7/21-7/25, 8/4-8/15 (5 days a week, Monday-Friday) 

  

(Travel days to Camp Alice Chester, East Troy, WI may be needed for waterfront days)  

What You’ll Do 

  • Under the guidance of camp RN manage the health care for the camp ensuring adherence to medical guidelines, health and cleanliness standards, communicable disease plan, and adequate health conditions for all based on standards set by the State of Wisconsin and other overarching organizations.  
  • Provide first aid and care in case of illness or accident to all camp participants and staff in accordance with Doctor Prescribed Standing Orders.   
  • Note and communicate any pertinent medical conditions of participants, staff, or other campers. 
  • Report serious illnesses and accidents to the appropriate parties as outlined by the health procedures. Submit completed reports in a timely manner. 
  • Monitor and evaluate camp procedures, facilities, and conditions. 
  • Administer and document all medications and healthcare provided in accordance to guardians directive. 
  • Follow all appropriate medical routines and guidelines including record keeping, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications, and utilizing approved standing orders for illness or injury. 
  • Comprehend, monitor and be willing to initiate crisis management plan and overall safety, including emergency procedures.   
  • Keep up with daily cleaning in health center and occasionally general office space. 
  • Assist in the opening and closing of health center, including managing and documenting inventory, and safely packing and/or disposing of all supplies when season ends.   
  • Set-up system for health screening for arriving campers and staff.    
  • Check, stock, and maintain first aid kits.   
  • Participate in and lead specific areas of pre-camp and in-service staff trainings pertaining to health and safety, first aid, and use of universal precautions for infection control. 

Requirements

 

Who You Are & Keys to Success: 

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Preferred certifications: Wisconsin certification as a registered nurse, practical nurse, physician assistant, physician, emergency medical technician, paramedic, or hold current American Red Cross Emergency Responder, Responding to Emergencies, or Wilderness First Responder/First Aid.
  • Must have current Adult and Child CPR certification, or willingness to get prior to the start of camp (training provided).
  • Ability to reach remote locations of camp property quickly, lift/assist campers and staff, and first aid equipment, if necessary.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license for at least one year. Valid driver’s license, compliance with the council’s policy of automobile insurance limits, and a driving record that meets the requirements for coverage of the council’s business auto insurance carrier.
  • Ability to make decisions and act wisely and calmly in emergencies.
  • Willingness to subscribe to the philosophy of the Girl Scout program and enroll as a Girl Scout member.
  • Comfort and ability to live, sleep, and work in a rustic outdoor environment with irregular hours.
  • Physical demands and work environment regularly requires the employee to walk, hike, and work outdoors in wooded areas and as well as inclement weather and extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to lift 40lbs.
  • Commitment to creating and maintaining a positive, fun, and professional environment.
  • Effectively and respectfully communicate instructions, issues, and needs with campers, staff, and supervisors.
  • Willingness to be an active member of camp and all camp activities while upholding Girl Scout traditions.
  • Must have background check completed by GSWISE.
