Job Description - Seasonal Program Facilitator

Description

The Program Facilitator is responsible for broadening and enriching the educational opportunities for visitors by facilitating and evaluating high quality museum programs based on sound content and aligned with the museum’s Learning Framework, educational philosophy and mission. Program topics include but are not limited to science, art, music, culture, technology, language and literacy, health and social and emotional learning. Programs can be provided both onsite and offsite, during regular museum hours and/or evenings and weekends. Successful Program Facilitators are committed to providing creative, innovative, fun, relevant programs to visitors.

The position requires schedule flexibility, including a minimum of 32 hours up to a maximum of 35 hours a week with at least one (1) weekend day and occasional holidays and after-hours availability for special events/facility rentals as assigned by management. The Seasonal Program Facilitator must be available from May 12 to August 22, 2024.

Position Responsibilities:

Leadership and Accountability

  • Maintains a high level of knowledge in the museum’s exhibit content and activities.
  • Consistently is prepared for programs and effectively manages all details.
  • Takes initiative in completely assigned and unassigned work
  • Disseminates knowledge learned during workshops and professional trainings with colleagues to improve the museum experiences
  • Serves as support for museum staff on high-volume days or as needed and available.

Learning Impact

  • Engages caregivers and educator in the learning outcomes for their children; welcomes and connects with each caregiver; encourages supportive and involved relationships with each caregiver and child; helps build skills for caregivers and educators.
  • Collaborates with team members to mentor and guide the development of museum staff with a focus on modeling and sharing best practices in program research, planning, development and facilitation.

Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Assists with special events and evening programming as needed and available.
  • Helps train and lead volunteers, interns, and SSMC staff in museum projects and activities.

Stewardship and Customer Focus

  • Represents Stepping Stones as a highly respected educational resource and effectively shares the vision, mission and strategies in a variety of settings.
  • Proactively identifies, recruits and leverages expertise and resources to create win-win community partnerships.

Requirements

Required Education and/or Certification:

  • College degree in education, child development, museum education or relevant field/content area.
  • CPR/first aid certification 

Minimum Experience/Skills:

  • Minimum two (2) years in informal/nontraditional educational program facilitation; experience with a child-centered, experiential approach to learning.
  • Experience in educational program writing and facilitation.
  • Focus on consistently providing quality service to visitors; strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with staff, visitors, volunteers and community partners.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; bilingual desirable, Spanish a plus.
  • Ability to learn content quickly.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Creative problem-solving skills; proven ability to recommend and implement process improvements and new initiatives; reliable, professional, adaptable and flexible.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite; ability to learn new systems and software.
  • Sensitive to diversity including individuals with physical challenges or special needs.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver materials, suitcases, tubs up to 10 – 50 pounds; operate and load/unload museum vehicles; kneel, walk and ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
