JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Seasonal Staff- Program Leader   BRANCH: Camp Collins

SUPERVISOR: Senior Program Director

The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette is a mission driven organization, which seeks individuals who are enthusiastic and passionate about our mission and vision. We do this by putting the Christian principles of love, respect, honesty, responsibility and service into practice.   

General Function:

Lead outdoor educational, team/leadership development, and recreational activities for both children and adults. Assume responsibility for the well-being and safety of all participants, assist in program equipment management and general upkeep as needed. Teach traditional camp activities including but not limited to rock climbing, archery, arts and crafts, biking, hiking and outdoor survival skills. Lead groups in team/leadership development activities including group games, initiatives and low challenge course facilitation. Program Leaders must demonstrate positive, professional role modeling at all times, acting in a manner that is consistent with the staff code of conduct and the philosophy, goals and objectives of YMCA Camp Collins.

Essential Functions Of Job:

  • Incorporate and Model our YMCA Christian principles of love, respect, honesty, responsibility and service into your work
  • Commit to establishing long-term relationships with staff, volunteers, participants, members and families
  • Work a schedule that includes weekdays, evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Complete training and receive certification in Adult/Child/Infant CPR, AED and Community First Aid within 30 days from hire date

Job Segments:

  • Complete training and demonstrate proficiency through practical teaching in recreation activities such as climbing,      bouldering, archery, crafts, biking, leading hikes, and field games 
  • Complete training and demonstrate proficiency through practical teaching in outdoor survival and education activities such as fire starting, shelter building, orienteering, nature-based games and Leave No Trace wilderness ethics
  • Complete training and demonstrate proficiency through practical teaching in team/leadership development activities such as teambuilding games, group initiatives, low element facilitation and high element facilitation as certification allows
  • Complete training and demonstrate the ability to lead evening camp activities such as story telling, campfire skits, indoor games, songs, night hikes and astronomy sessions 
  • Assist guests during meals and transitional periods
  • Assist in projects that complement instructional activities and develop or improve program areas
  • Maintain high standards of well-being and safety in all activities for retreat guests
  • Provide engaging and positive activity instruction in all program areas
  • Understand the need for, and demonstrate a willingness to be an exemplary role model at all times in camp and at other times off-site when representing YMCA Camp Collins
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of investment in camp, including the cleanliness of facilities, care of equipment and supplies, and stewardship of the natural environment
  • Actively participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings
  • Follow the specific directives of the Senior Program Manager and Executive Director.

  7. Meets attendance expectations, follows Association procedures for requesting and documenting absences, is punctual, reliable, and adaptable, takes initiative, and accepts responsibility.
  8. Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills, perceives, understands and manages interactions appropriately, is accountable for own actions, capitalizes on learning opportunities, and is open to performance feedback and coaching.
  9. Demonstrates compliance in the following areas: Comply, employee paperwork, performance evaluations, personnel policies, and procedures i.e. dress code, code of conduct. Attends mandatory trainings and meetings, acquires and maintains required certifications for current position. 
  10. Demonstrates proficiency through practical teaching in recreation, education and leadership activities.
  11. Assists guests and provides engaging and positive instruction in all areas.

Requirements

 Entry Requirements: 

  • Minimum age 18
  • CPR, AED and First Aid certification within 30 days of employment
  • Background in outdoor recreational/educational/team development activities, camp experience helpful
  • Experience in child development, education, recreation or a related field is preferred 
  • Ability to interact with youth and adult guests in a positive manner
  • Ability to connect with supporting staff members
  • Requires strong communication skills, positive attitude, flexibility, dependability and ability to work and problem solve as a customer service oriented member of the camp community
  • Must be able to walk with groups around all areas of camp
  • Must be able to lift and carry program area equipment 
  • Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to respond swiftly in an emergency situation 
  • Ability and willingness to learn on the job in an environment that changes quickly
