Self Performed Work Manager

Position Summary:  

The Self-Performed Work Manager oversees and manages all resources related to Story’s self-performed work. This role is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective deployment and utilization of Story’s craft workforce performing scopes of work within concrete, steel and precast erection, rough and finish carpentry, process piping and equipment operation. The Self-Performed Work Manager develops and drives strategy to grow the companies’ self-performed work program in alignment with Story’s business development goals. 

Summary of Duties:  

• Responsible for hiring, training and development, and project assignment of Story’s Craftworker team (Construction Workers, Crew Leaders, Foremen, and Heavy Equipment Operators). 


• Working in conjunction with General Superintendent and Operations Manager, assigns and coordinates craftworker project assignments weekly. 


•  Develop and implement strategies to reduce variability in our craftworker count and drive predictable and sustainable growth. This will include establishing workable backlog as a buffer to manpower fluctuations and pursuing SPW work opportunities directly in the market (with Estimating support as needed).   


• Forecast craftworker numbers and training needs looking 6-12 months ahead and aligns resources with upcoming needs.


• Review Self-Performed Work labor and equipment estimates (prepared by the Estimating Department) before finalization and communicates project labor/equipment plans with project teams at project kick-off.


• Review monthly self-performed work project labor projections across all projects to compare against estimates, raising issues to General Superintendent and Operations Manager and troubleshooting as needed. 


• Promote and reinforce a culture of safety with support from Story’s Safety Personnel.


• Ensure that all self-performed work meets company quality standards and client expectations.


• Support and drive utilization of Story’s CP2.0 work-planning system.


• Identify and implement tools, processes, and strategies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of self-performed work.


• Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

• 10 years of industry experience, minimum of 5 years leading/managing successful labor operations with responsibility for hiring, training, development, project assignment, safety, quality, productivity, and profitability.       


• Experience in resource allocation/utilization and development of craft labor and field leadership.       


• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineering preferred, but not required. 
  


• Experience in labor production and cost estimation of self-perform scopes (concrete, steel, general carpentry, equipment operation).


• Advanced knowledge of scopes of work within concrete, steel, and heavy equipment operation including constructability, scheduling, costing, and productivity.

Travel: Occasional out-of-town and overnight travel expected. May be assigned to multiple jobsites simultaneously, travel to and from jobsites may be frequent.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements: 

Primarily work out of the corporate office; however, may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, loud noises, and more within OSHA standards when visited the jobsite. Employees may be exposed to outdoor conditions that include inclement weather such as heat, humidity, cold, wind, and dust. May be expected to carry up to 30 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, stand for long periods of time, walk for moderate-to-long distances on varying surface conditions, climb, crawl, crouch, reach, grip, push, and pull without issue.
