Senior Accountant / Accounting Manager

Construction Industry

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Location: In Office


Position Summary

Our client, a well-established construction company, is seeking a highly motivated Senior Accountant or Accounting Manager to join its growing finance team. This position is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys a hands-on environment and is looking for a long-term opportunity with a clear path toward a future Controller role.

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Senior Accountant/Accounting Manager will oversee general ledger accounting, payroll operations, accounts payable supervision, and support tax and financial reporting activities. The organization is currently investing in process improvements and automation initiatives, creating an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys helping modernize accounting operations while maintaining strong financial controls.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter, possesses strong technical accounting skills, and is eager to grow into a broader leadership position within the company.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.

  • Prepare and review monthly journal entries and account reconciliations.

  • Reconcile accrual accounts, cash accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.

  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Support the preparation of internal financial reports and analysis for management.


Accounts Payable Oversight

  • Supervise the Accounts Payable function.

  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of vendor payments and expense reporting.

  • Help evaluate and improve AP processes as the company transitions from a largely manual environment to more automated workflows.

  • Support implementation and optimization of accounting automation initiatives.


Payroll Administration

  • Oversee payroll operations and supervise a Payroll Clerk.

  • Manage:

    • Biweekly corporate payroll for approximately 30 employees.

    • Weekly labor payroll for approximately 40 employees.



  • Ensure payroll accuracy, compliance, and timely processing.

  • Maintain payroll records and support audits as needed.


Tax & Compliance Support

  • Prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for business tax filings.

  • Coordinate with the company's external accounting partner, LBMC, which prepares and files tax returns.

  • Assist with year-end audits and other compliance requirements.


Systems & Process Improvement

  • Work within Foundation Construction Accounting Software.

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting capabilities.

  • Participate in ongoing accounting system and automation enhancements.


Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.

  • CPA designation or active progression toward CPA certification.

  • 2+ years of progressive accounting experience.

  • Strong general ledger accounting and account reconciliation experience.

  • Experience supervising accounting staff.

  • Solid understanding of payroll processing and accounting principles.

  • Strong Excel and financial systems skills.

  • Ability to work independently and proactively identify solutions.


Preferred

  • Construction industry accounting experience is a huge plus

  • Experience with Foundation Construction Accounting Software would be a plus

  • Experience managing payroll in a multi-pay-cycle environment would be a plus

  • Exposure to accounting process automation and workflow improvements.
