Job Description - Senior Accountant

DTRIC is looking to fill the position of Senior Accountant.

Primary Responsibilities:

Timely and accurately prepares journal entries, reconciles accounts, and prepares schedules, statements and reports with minimal supervision. Responsible for maintaining the general ledger system and other sub-systems as required or assigned with minimal supervision. Responsible for reconciling all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis and for verification and maintenance of records and detailed schedules, and analysis of all general ledger account activities and balances including documentation of variances to budget and/or prior period actual with minimal supervision. Prepares certain financial or statistical reports, statements, schedules and regulatory and tax filings with minimal supervision. Assists and supports the Controller by communicating regularly with and coordinating work with department personnel, including Treasury. Assigned more complex areas including but not limited to insurance premiums, losses, recoverables, case and IBNR reserves, Sch P, reinsurance, budgeting/forecasting, risk based capital (RBC) forecasting and corporate taxes. Supports the annual audit/review/tax process by preparing schedules requested by independent auditors or external examiners/regulators. Supports special projects, such as enterprise or financial software upgrades or implementations, etc.

Essential Functions:

1. Maintains the general ledger system by accurately and timely preparing and processing journal entries (recurring and adjusting), and preparing or maintaining supporting schedules and/or source documentation to ensure accounts and records are accurate and properly maintained.

2. Prepares regular account reconciliations and variance analysis to ensure that records are complete and accurate and all transactions have been properly recorded.

3. Compiles monthly internal financial statements for management.

4. Prepares other statements, schedules, surveys and reports for various parties including but not limited to management, the board of directors, shareholders, regulators, auditors and rating agencies.

5. Reviews their work product to ensure that the data and information is complete and accurate and adheres to internal and external deadlines.

6. Understand and comply with the Company’s and the department’s policies and procedures.

7. Seek opportunities to improve operational efficiency, as well as recommend changes in procedures which may help the Company achieve its goals, increase productivity, improve internal controls, enhance profitability, etc.

8. Maintains current knowledge of accounting standards, federal and state laws, rules, policies and directives, particularly those of the insurance industry.

9. Documents policies, procedures and workflow responsibilities for assigned areas of responsibility.

Other Functions:

1. Attends and participates in any required training relevant to the position.

2. Serves as a backup to other Finance Department personnel.

3. Performs other Accounting related duties as may be required or assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Skills/Knowledge:

1. Extensive understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

2. Knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) preferred

3. Extensive knowledge of general ledger and subsidiary accounting and financial reporting systems.

4. Able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Able to translate abstract contracts, instructions into practical accounting solutions.

5. Excellent organizational and good time management skills. Ability to handle multiple projects/tasks simultaneously. Ability to prioritize and schedule work-load based on established deadlines and time requirements of various tasks. Develops and follows effective processes to complete assignments and achieve quality results.

6. Able to identify problems and to provide and pursue effective solutions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

7. Ability to determine financial impact of business decisions through use of financial analysis or models.

8. Able to comprehend other departmental technical issues (Underwriting, Claims, Reinsurance, etc.) and interpret accounting and financial impact preferred.

Education/Experience:

1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. Relevant equivalent work experience may replace a Bachelor’s degree.

2. Minimum (7) seven years’ experience in accounting and/or financial reporting required.

3. Working knowledge of personal computers, mainframe systems, internal controls, accounting systems and experienced user of Microsoft Office, including but not limited to Excel, Outlook, and Word.

4. Familiarity with the extraction, assimilation and corroboration of data and reports from information systems (i.e. complex computer environments) required.

5. Insurance company and/or managing general insurance agency accounting and/or financial reporting required

6. CPA license or other relevant professional licenses or credentials preferred.
