Job Description - Senior Accounting Process Consultant

A long-established Memphis-based distributor with 29 employees is seeking an experienced Senior Accounting Process Consultant for a short-term engagement to evaluate the company's current accounting and finance processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, controls, and workflow. This is a high-level assessment and advisory engagement, rather than a staff accounting position. The consultant will review the current-state environment, meet with key stakeholders, evaluate accounting workflows and system usage, and provide practical recommendations for improving the accounting function.

Scope of Work

The consultant will review key accounting processes, including:

Accounts Payable: vendor setup, invoice processing, approvals, coding, and payment processes.

Accounts Receivable: invoicing, cash application, aging, and collections workflow.

Payroll & Timekeeping: flow of employee time information and payroll inputs through ADP.

Month-End Close: current close procedures, reconciliations, general ledger activity, and hybrid cash/accrual accounting processes.

Inventory Accounting: inventory activity, reconciliations, standard-cost processes, and the interaction between Stone Edge and the accounting process.

Sales Tax: current processes supporting sales tax filings across 17 states.

Systems & Workflow: how QuickBooks Online, Stone Edge, and ADP are used and how information moves between systems.

Internal Controls: areas where approvals, segregation of responsibilities, documentation, or review processes could be strengthened.

Roles & Responsibilities: evaluate how accounting responsibilities are currently organized and identify potential gaps, duplication, or opportunities to streamline.

Identify manual processes, bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improved standardization or automation.

Expected Deliverables

At the conclusion of the engagement, the consultant should provide:

A practical assessment of the current-state accounting processes.

Identification of key risks, gaps, bottlenecks, and inefficiencies.

Recommendations for improving workflows, controls, and accounting procedures.

Prioritized quick wins versus longer-term improvements.

Recommendations regarding effective utilization of QuickBooks Online, Stone Edge, and ADP within the accounting workflow.

Guidance on documentation and standard operating procedures that would strengthen the accounting function.

A leadership readout summarizing findings and recommended next steps.

Qualifications

Significant hands-on experience leading or assessing accounting operations for small to mid-sized businesses.

Strong understanding of AP, AR, general ledger, month-end close, payroll processes, inventory accounting, and internal controls.

Experience conducting accounting process assessments, finance transformation projects, controllership consulting, or similar engagements.

Strong QuickBooks Online knowledge required.

Experience with inventory-intensive or distribution businesses is required.

Familiarity with ADP preferred; Stone Edge experience is helpful but not required.

Ability to quickly understand an existing environment, ask the right questions, and translate findings into practical, actionable recommendations.

Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with both accounting personnel and company leadership.

Work Arrangement & Location

Company located in Memphis, Tennessee.

Some onsite presence is required to observe processes and meet with key stakeholders.

A primarily remote arrangement may be considered, provided the consultant can accommodate necessary onsite work.

Reporting Arrangement

The consultant will work directly with company leadership and key accounting/process stakeholders during the assessment.
