Job Description

General Statement of Duties

An employee in this class is responsible for managing the office staff who administer senior center programs, and activities, volunteers, operations, and the functions of the Senior Services Thomasville facility. This position works within broad policy and organizational guidelines to manage staff and programs.  Progress is reported through periodic conferences and meetings. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Services Director and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and the quality and effectiveness of work completed.

Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Manages the daily operations and maintenance of the senior center and volunteer programs.
  • Supervises and directs the work of subordinate employees through budgetary review, meetings, development of work plans and goals, performance appraisals and other supervision related tasks.  
  • Oversees the maintenance, upkeep, and safety of the Senior Services, Thomasville facility and grounds, including scheduling repairs, managing contractors, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. Serves as county safety coordinator for Senior Services portion of the building.
  • Serves as the Safety Coordinator for the Senior Services, Thomasville facility.
  • Coordinates agency sponsorship program, special projects, and community events.  coordinator.
  • Collaborates with community agencies and organizations to expand program offerings and build relationships with other organizations serving seniors. 
  • Works with the Director and staff to develop and implement long and short-range goals for the senior center and volunteer program.
  • Monitors senior center operations and program evaluation in accordance with NCSAAS service standards and to maintain National and State certification.
  • Works with the Director to participate in the preparation and administration of the Center’s portion of the county budget and center funding though the Home and Community Care Grant.
  • Attends management meetings for inter-agency communication and program planning.
  • Prepares advisory board and grant funding reports.
  • Interviews applicants, recommend hiring, and train new employees.
  • Assists with interpretation and implementation of federal, state and local policies and guidelines.
  • Develops, under the direction of the Director, policies, procedures and guidelines for internal and public use.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of community resources available to senior citizens.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of organization, administration and management.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer operating systems, applications and capabilities.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with related organizations.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of walking, talking, standing, and hearing.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures; perform accounting; operate a computer terminal; and perform visual inspection of small defects or parts, operation or inspection of machines.

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a four-year degree and considerable experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
