Job Description - Senior Clerk - Deli - BU

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Customer Experience



  • Provide an exceptional shopping experience and friendly and welcoming environment for all members, customers, and co-workers

  • Model, and ensure customers receive prompt, helpful, attentive, and authentically friendly service in accordance with the Co-op’s customer service standards

  • Assist customers in locating products throughout the store and with placing special orders; seek opportunities to exceed customer expectations and enhance the customer experience

  • Maintain a calm and friendly demeanor with all customers and co-workers in all situations

  • Greet and interact with customers at service counters; ensure every customer is provided with an exceptional shopping experience

  • Answer incoming department phone calls and route them using paging or transfer system; take and route messages as needed

  • Follow through on all employee and customer questions and requests; escalate to appropriate member of management as needed


Senior Clerk Leadership Responsibilities



  • Promote team building and motivate staff to achieve their delegated tasks

  • As directed, delegate and direct work of clerks, cooks, and bakers, ensuring they are keeping on task and taking meal/rest breaks at appropriate times

  • Assist with time and attendance record keeping by noting tardy and absences on attendance log sheet

  • Ensure clerks, cooks, and bakers are following all department procedures; provide coaching and retraining as needed; document and report issues to Prepared Foods Department Head for follow-up

  • Train clerks, cooks and bakers in department service and production policies and procedures

  • Provide support to all service and production shifts including but not limited to, delegating/reassigning labor, calling employees for additional shifts, working in service or production as needed

  • Ability to work all department service and production shifts as needed

  • Take frequent opportunities to recognize good work

  • Report maintenance, IT, safety, and janitorial issues using appropriate channels

  • Handle customer questions and resolve complaints; refer problems to Department Head or Manager as needed

  • Assist with medical emergencies, disorderly customers and/or shoplifters in accordance with established procedures

  • Attend and actively participate in department meetings, store-wide and org-wide meetings, and trainings, as requested

  • Provide suggestions for improvement of prepared foods operations via email to Department Head

  • Take initiative to identify, report and resolve problems before they can escalate


Prepared Foods Operations



  • Maintain smooth flow of service and production areas; ensure customers are acknowledged and helped quickly and efficiently

  • Lead daily production of all-house made beverages, baked goods, and hot/cold product following the highest standard of food safety, cooking/baking techniques and in accordance with department expectations and procedures

  • Ensure clerks, cooks, and bakers are following established recipes and cooking/baking techniques

  • Assist with monitoring department product quality standards, pull product as needed and address with clerks, cooks, and bakers; notify Department Head for follow-up

  • Ensure clerks, cooks and bakers are implementing daily production sheets; adjust as needed; follow up with Department Head

  • Assist with monitoring product signage and ensure ingredients and major allergens are accurately identified; take immediate appropriate action if corrections need to be made; follow up with Department Head

  • Effectively maintain fresh, full, attractive, and garnished food in hot and cold grab n go and full-service cases throughout shift

  • Assist with maintaining and updating recipes and production batch list yields and report any discrepancies or inaccuracies to Department Head

  • Participate in recipe improvement and development as requested by department management

  • Ensure department procedures for special orders are being followed and confirm orders for accuracy

  • Pull expired product based on sell-by date, time and temperature guidelines and quality standards and record accurately by weight or quantity on spoilage sheet

  • Ensure clerks, cooks, and bakers are maintaining a clean and organized workstation throughout the shift

  • Maintain dishwashing/sanitizing station and equipment in good condition and working order

  • Maintain department appearance and cleanliness including wiping down hot and cold grab-and-go and full-service areas; restocking as needed, regularly face grab-and-go product, ensuring signage is accurate and in good condition; request new signage if needed, clean shelves, and displays; keep floors clear of debris, sweep/mop, dust, empty compost, trash and recycling as needed

  • Maintain backstock and work area cleanliness; sweep and mop floors regularly, ensure all department employees wash/sanitize dishes throughout the shifts, sanitize all equipment including countertops, knives, cutting boards; organize and properly store/rotate inventory

  • Receive product deliveries, ensuring order and invoice accuracy; process invoices and obtain credits as directed by supervisor, following established procedures

  • Assist Department Head with coordinating tasks and projects for clerks, cooks, and bakers during down time

  • Organize time efficiently, prioritize, maintain focus, and stay productive

  • Oversee monitoring of refrigeration equipment and product temperature checks and notify maintenance and Department Head of discrepancies


Store Operations



  • Regularly check mailbox and/or email for important company communications and review posted memos

  • Assist in other departments/store, inventory counts, store-wide cleaning, and perform all other duties, as assigned


Sanitation & Safety



  • Follow all procedures in sanitation and safe food handling, per California Health and Safety Code requirements - Retail Food Code

  • Communicate and document any equipment maintenance and/or safety concerns to department management


 


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES



  • Understanding of quality scratch food production and fundamental cooking and baking techniques

  • Possesses SERV Safe or Food Handlers certification, or able to obtain within first month of employment

  • Ability to work accurately and quickly in a fast-paced deli and bakery environment to meet timelines
    and goals

  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and recipes; knowledge and understanding of dietary and


 measurement abbreviations and conversions



  • Knowledge and understanding of food allergies and special diets

  • Outstanding customer service skills, proactively looks for ways to help customers

  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to work as part of a team; ability to communicate effectively and be an active listener

  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills

  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures, work without direct supervision on a variety of tasks simultaneously, prioritize while remaining flexible in a fast-paced environment, and delegate tasks and objectives to subordinates

  • Able to sensibly handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve conflicts, or otherwise negotiate with others

  • Ability to motivate and inspire self and service and production teams

  • Ability to understand and adhere to all organizational and department rules, policies, and procedures, including but not limited to those listed in the employee handbook, CBA, and Health and Safety guidelines

  • Works well independently but able to work closely and cooperatively with others

  • Disseminates ideas, proposals, feedback, and other information in a clear, respectful, effective, and timely manner

  • Must be honest, ethical, and able to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction

  • Is pleasant with others on the job and displays a good-natured, cooperative attitude

  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job


 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  • At least three years’ experience working in food service required; with knowledge and ability to perform as lead department lead, overseeing the work of others and availability to work all service and production shifts as needed


 


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


Physical Requirements



  • Stand and walk for extended periods of time

  • Ability to work late night or early morning shifts

  • Ability to work at a fast pace

  • Ability to push/pull bins and racks weighing up to 100 lbs.

  • Bend and stoop to grasp objects and climb ladders

  • Bend and twist neck and waist, reach above and below shoulders and squat

  • Bend and lift loads, not to exceed 75 lbs.

  • Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation


Work Environment


Fast paced deli and bakery production areas and retail floor environment. At times may work with or near moving mechanical parts (i.e. ovens, mixers, slicer, food processor, immersion blender, dish sanitizer, baler, dock equipment) and in cold/hot climate conditions. Ability to work in moderate and loud noise environments including, but not limited to production equipment, computers, paging, telephones, human voices, sound system and machinery. Occasional job-related travel within Eureka and Arcata.


 


Customary Work Schedule


This position customarily works Monday through Friday, with the appropriate meal and rest breaks. Occasional evening, and/or weekend shifts, and occasional overtime may be required to meet business needs. The position requires reliable dependable performance and punctuality, anything less places a hardship on other employees and store operations, therefore, regular and prompt attendance is essential to this position. Employees are expected to report for work on time and appropriately uniformed and to accurately report all time worked using the timeclock and break sheet procedures.
