Job Description - Senior Construction Engineer

The Senior Construction Engineer coordinates and performs observation of public works, street, highway, bridge, building components, infrastructure and track right of way on construction projects according to the specific areas of expertise of the inspector; performs related duties as required. Conducts on-site observations of construction installations, including but not limited to materials, grade elevations, underground facilities, construction safety precautions, minor concrete structures, street light installations, traffic signal installations, traffic control devices, and erosion and siltation control installations to determine compliance with contract plans and specifications, and with city and other governmental regulations. Reviews construction plans, specifications, encroachment permits, and other plans affecting assigned projects. Participates in meetings to discuss construction details and resolves issues with contractors and other project stakeholders. May make field measurements. May ensure conformance with applicable safety standards and regulations. Assists in coordinating materials testing. Identifies on-site project problems. Observes reports and alerts appropriate members of project team on non-conformance issues. Monitors the correction of project deficiencies. Identifies and recommends approval of necessary contract and/or plan adjustments to accommodate field conditions. Maintains daily diary and field records of material and quantities used. Calculates and recommends formal approval of appropriate progress payments to contractors for work completed. Investigates citizen complaints related to encroachment and/or grading violations.

Requirements:



  • KNOWLEDGE: Having wide-ranging experience, uses standard construction concepts and company objectives to resolve
    complex issues in effective ways.

  • JOB COMPLEXITY: Works on complex issues and important projects. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques
    and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Internal and external contacts often pertain to significant company plans and
    objectives. May provide consultation and advice to management regarding matters of importance to the functional area.
    An individual with broader experience, exercises independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria
    for obtaining results. Contacts pertain to significant matters often involving coordination among groups. Occasionally
    provides consultation and advice to management regarding matters of considerable importance to the functional area.

  • SUPERVISION: Works without specific instructions, exercising judgment to independently determine appropriate methods and procedures for completing new assignments. May provide guidance and indirect supervision to other personnel.
    An individual with broader experience exercises judgment to independently determine methods and procedures for completing new or special assignments. Occasionally provides direct or indirect supervision to other personnel.

  • EXPERIENCE: Typically requires a minimum of 8 to 12+ years of related experience. Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required. Illinois Department of Transportation experience is required. PE License is expected.
