As a Senior Data Scientist on our Risk team, you will leverage your expertise in data science to innovate and deploy models that enhance our detection capabilities across various risk vectors. Your work will directly influence our ability to safeguard our customers and Wise against malicious actors while maintaining exceptional user experience. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product, and compliance.

 

Here's how you'll be contributing:

• Lead the development and deployment of advanced machine learning models to enhance our detection of suspicious and fraudulent behaviors across different Wise markets.
• Analyze large volumes of data to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies associated with potential fraudulent and criminal activity.
• Design and implement experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of risk detection systems and continuously improve their performance.
• Collaborate with analysts, compliance and engineers to translate business and regulatory requirements into actionable data insights and solutions.
• Develop robust data pipelines, algorithms, and tools to support real-time detection and response to suspicious activity.
• Stay informed about the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and risk prevention techniques to ensure state-of-the-art capabilities in the risk domain.
• Mentor and guide junior data scientists, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning within the team.

• Strong proficiency in Python with the ability to make and justify design decisions in your code
• Experience with machine learning frameworks and familiarity with when to use gradient boosting, neural networks, regression, autoencoders, clustering, or hybrid approaches
• Hands-on experience with large datasets and data processing technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, SQL)
• Knowledge of anomaly detection, supervised and unsupervised learning methods, and real-time data analysis
• Proficiency with Git for collaboration (pull requests, code reviews) and ability to read Java code
• Strong statistical analysis skills with excellent presentation abilities to translate insights into action
• Strong product mindset with the ability to work independently across cross-functional and cross-team environments
• Excellent communication skills - you can explain complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders
• Proactive problem-solving approach with a passion for protecting users from criminal activities
• Collaborative team player who can help refine problem statements and develop effective solutions
• Proven experience in a data science role, with bonus points for fraud detection, anti-money laundering, or fintech experience
• Experience working with compliance teams to ensure control effectiveness
• Demonstrable experience collaborating with engineering teams on production services
