Purpose of Job:
The Senior Director of Healthcare Information Systems will be responsible for leading the planning, implementation, and management of all healthcare information systems and technology initiatives. This role will collaborate closely with clinical, operational and administrative stakeholders to ensure the effective integration of IT solutions into clinical workflows, streamline operations, and optimize patient care delivery. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of healthcare IT systems, regulatory requirements, and best practices in information management. They will lead a team that will simultaneously enable growth, drive consolidation and standardization as well as enable technical and functional improvements of our healthcare technology platform.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the strategic planning and execution of healthcare information systems initiatives, including Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR) implementation, Health Information Exchange (HIE) integration, data analytics, and interoperability solutions.
Provide leadership and direction to the IT team, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, priorities, and industry best practices.
Collaborate with clinical and operational stakeholders to assess IT needs, prioritize projects, and develop technology roadmaps that support business objectives and enhance patient care delivery.
Oversee the selection, customization, and implementation of EMR/EHR and practice management systems, ensuring seamless integration with existing clinical workflows and regulatory compliance.
Drive the development and implementation of data analytics solutions to support data-driven decision-making, quality improvement initiatives, and population health management.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements such as HIPAA, HITECH, and Meaningful Use, maintaining confidentiality, integrity, and security of electronic health information.
Establish and maintain relationships with external vendors, partners, and regulatory agencies to stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes.
Develop and manage departmental budgets, control costs, and optimize resource allocation to deliver high-quality IT services and support.
Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to the IT team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Monitor vendor performance against established SLAs and key performance indicators (KPIs), identifying areas for improvement and driving continuous service enhancements.
Collaborate with vendors to troubleshoot technical issues, resolve escalated support tickets, and coordinate software upgrades, patches, and maintenance activities to minimize downtime and ensure system reliability.
Lead the vendor selection process, conducting thorough evaluations of vendor capabilities, product offerings, pricing structures, and service levels to ensure alignment with organizational needs and objectives.
Serve as the primary point of contact for vendor communications, facilitating regular meetings, status updates, and performance reviews to ensure alignment with project timelines, deliverables, and objectives.
Create, maintain, and improve downtime processes and documentation. Problem and incident management.
Ensures that all aspects of technology are compliant with HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, and all other requirements to ensure appropriate controls, policies and procedures, and other requirements are in place.
Education and Experience:
A minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Systems, Business Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Master's level degree or equivalent experience is desired.
8+ years experience in IT operations management, with a focus on healthcare systems solutions and delivery.
5 years experience working in mid-size enterprises ($500 M - $2 B) required.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
High business acumen and acuity
Proven track record of leading enterprise scale, complex programs successfully. Healthcare organization experience preferred.
People leadership and management skills, including direct experience leading, managing and mentoring large teams.
Strong understanding of healthcare regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, HITECH, and Meaningful Use, with demonstrated experience ensuring compliance in a healthcare setting.
Successful track record of delivering programs on scope, on time, on budget, on quality and on benefit in highly matrixed and geographically distributed environments
Established successful external partnerships with technology product and service providers.
Willingness and ability to travel occasionally, if needed
Ability to work in a collaborative and team-oriented environment
Skillful at building core relationships, establishing credibility and an influential communicator
Spoken and written fluency in English
Ability to use and exercise of sound independent judgment and discretion
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequently required to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms
Ability to apply manual dexterity including hand/wrist flexibility for computer keyboarding
Occasionally required to sit, bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 15 lbs.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
Frequently required to hear and speak in order to use telephone, make presentations, and communicate with people in an office and clinic environment
Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person
Extended hours may be needed
