Job Description - Senior Director of Grant Strategy & Compliance

Salary Range $65,000 - $85,000/Annually Depending on Experience

Under the direction of the Vice President of Finance/Controller, the Senior Director of Grant Strategy & Compliance provides strategic leadership and oversight of the YMCA of Greater San Antonio’s grants portfolio. This role is responsible for setting grant strategy, ensuring organization-wide compliance, overseeing grant governance and internal controls, and managing resources and staff supporting grants management.

The Senior Director focuses on risk management, compliance integrity, and long-term grant sustainability, while partnering with finance, philanthropy, and branch leadership to ensure grants align with organizational priorities and regulatory requirements.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

1.    Provide strategic oversight of the Association’s grants portfolio, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, financial controls, and compliance standards.

2.    Establish and maintain grant compliance frameworks, policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure adherence to funder, regulatory, and audit requirements.

3.    Oversee and monitor compliance across all grant-funded programs, identifying risks, addressing gaps, and implementing corrective actions as needed.

4.    Support grants management staff, including workload planning, performance oversight, coaching, and professional development.

5.    Serve as the senior-level authority on grant compliance and governance, providing guidance to internal stakeholders and leadership on complex or high-risk awards.

6.    Partner with Finance to ensure grant budgets, reimbursements, and financial reporting align with award terms, accounting standards, and internal controls.

7.    Review and approve interim, progress, and final grant reports prior to submission to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance.

8.    Oversee grant resourcing and capacity planning, including staffing needs, systems, and tools required to support effective grant management.

9.    Provide strategic input on grant opportunities and proposal development, with a focus on feasibility, compliance readiness, and long-term sustainability.

10. Prepare executive-level grant summaries, dashboards, and compliance reports for senior leadership and the Board, as requested.

11. Serve as the primary escalation point for audits, monitoring visits, and funder inquiries related to grant compliance.

12. Support association-wide fundraising initiatives, including the One Y Annual Campaign, as appropriate.

13. Travel to YMCA branches or funder locations for oversight meetings, site visits, or audits, as required.

14. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the YMCA’s mission, financial stewardship, and compliance objectives


QUALIFICATIONS:



  1. Bachelor’s degree preferred; advanced degree also preferred.



  2. Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in grants management, compliance, or nonprofit financial oversight.



  3. Demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing complex grants portfolios.



  4. Strong understanding of compliance, internal controls, and grant-funded financial reporting.



  5. Advanced communication, analytical, and leadership skills.



  6. Proficiency in grants management systems and Microsoft Office.



  7. Must be 21 and obtain a Valid Texas driver’s license with ability to travel as required.



  8. CPR Pro and First Aid certifications required within the first 60 days of employment.




WORKING CONDITIONS:



  1. Work is primarily performed in a fast-paced office environment, with periodic meetings and activities at off-site locations, including YMCA branches and funder offices.



  2. Ability to travel to multiple locations as required for meetings, site visits, and program observation.



  3. Visual acuity is required for reading computer screens, reviewing documents, and preparing written materials.



  4. Position requires sustained focus, attention to detail, and mental alertness to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.



  5. Role requires analytical skills and multitasking ability to identify issues, evaluate information, and recommend appropriate solutions.



  6. Occasional bending, stooping, and lifting of up to 20 pounds may be required.



  7. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and to use office equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, and writing tools is essential.



  8. This position operates in a hybrid work environment, requiring a minimum of two full days per week in the office. Additional on-site presence may be required based on operational needs and job responsibilities.
