Job Description - Senior Director, Officiating


The Senior Director, Officiating position ensures the quality and consistency of NFL officiating, including but not limited to game officials’ communication and application of officiating rules and standards. This individual will be responsible for assisting with weekly officiating operations, rules education, Competition Committee collaboration, officiating development programs, and video-based training initiatives while preparing to assume leadership responsibilities during multiple game windows at the Art McNally Game Day Central location 


Responsibilities



  • Assist in the development and execution of league-wide officiating training programs for game officials and officiating staff

  • Coordinate and oversee weekly officiating training videos and educational materials, and performance development initiatives

  • Develop, and distribute weekly officiating training videos highlighting rules applications, mechanics, points of clarification and game situations

  • Assist in officiating performance reports for distribution for Quarterly CBA meeting requirements

  • Conduct film review and analysis of officiating performance to identify trends, teaching opportunities, and corrective instruction

  • Support pre-season clinics, in-season training meetings, postseason evaluations, and officiating development camps

  • Serve as a liaison supporting initiatives involving the Competition Committee and Officiating Department

  • Participate in Competition Committee preparation meetings and support presentation development for club rules proposals and recommendations

  • Assist in gathering video, statistical analysis, officiating reports, and research related to proposed rules

  • Track implementation and educational rollout of approved rule and policy changes across officiating staff and stakeholders

  • Participate in strategic planning and league officiating initiatives including Spring Clinics/All Star games and overall Scouting

  • Develop instructional knowledge related to officiating administration, league operations, and leadership responsibilities

  • Utilize video and analytics and performance data to improve officiating consistency and decision making

  • Manage mandatory remedial training for Tier 4 officials year-round with no off-season restriction-scheduling, coordinating film review, rules study, position trainer sessions, and developmental league placements

  • Track early removal from Probationary Status based on tier rankings across seasons

  • Schedule and conduct weekly virtual meetings for non-playoff and probationary officials during April 1-May 1

  • Coordinate developmental league placements for probationary Tier 4 officials (15 days after the Super Bowl)

  • Coordinate directly with officiating leadership, security, medical football operations, stadium operations, and club personnel as necessary to resolve active game situations

  • Arrange law enforcement escorts at each stadium where lawfully permitted

  • Provide annual update to the NFLRA on escort availability and transportation plans at each stadium

  • Ensure League-wide consistency in game administration decisions

  • Apply sound judgment balancing competitive integrity, player safety, operational continuity, and League standards.


Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Minimum 12 years of professional experience

  • Superior management skills, a strong executive presence, and exceptional oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent teaching and training skills

  • Computer proficient: Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook), Internet and DVSport, XOS


Other Key Attributes / Characteristics



  • Demonstrate understanding of NFL officiating rules and game day football operations

  • Ability to represent the NFL to a wide range of audiences including club executives, league department heads, players coaches, game officials and fans

  • Proven ability to build strong relationships and establish credibility in key internal and external relationships

  • Travel required throughout the year

Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would the NFL consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.
