Job Description - Senior Director/Executive Director, Scientific Communications

Overview:


The Senior Director/Executive Director, Scientific Communications is a strategic leader within the Medical Affairs organization and a key member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team. This individual will be responsible for developing and executing integrated scientific communication strategies across the company's oncology portfolio, including approved products and pipeline assets.


The Senior Director/Executive Director will lead publication strategy and execution, scientific platform development, congress communications, and field medical content development while ensuring alignment with broader Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, and corporate objectives. This highly visible role will partner closely with Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Translational Medicine, Biostatistics, Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Compliance, Commercial, and Executive Leadership to develop and maintain a compelling scientific narrative across all stages of product development.


The successful candidate will be a highly collaborative, strategic, and hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced biotechnology environment. This individual must possess the ability to independently drive initiatives, influence cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority, and build scalable scientific communications processes and infrastructure in a lean organization.



Responsibilities:



  • Lead the development and execution of integrated scientific communication strategies for approved and pipeline oncology assets, aligned with overall Medical Affairs and corporate objectives.

  • Serve as the scientific communications lead on cross-functional asset teams, providing strategic input on data dissemination, scientific positioning, and communication planning.

  • Ensure consistency of scientific messaging across publications, congress presentations, field medical materials, advisory boards, medical education initiatives, and other scientific exchange activities.

  • Partner with Medical Affairs leadership to develop annual and long-range scientific communication plans and budgets.

  • Accountable for the development and execution of comprehensive publication plans for assigned assets, ensuring alignment with medical objectives and strategic priorities.

  • Lead publication planning teams and publication steering committees to ensure timely dissemination of scientific and clinical data.

  • Develop publication strategies that support assets from early clinical development through commercialization and lifecycle management.

  • Partner with clinical, statistical, translational, and medical teams to identify publication opportunities and optimize data dissemination.

  • Maintain oversight of publication timelines, budgets, and vendor deliverables.

  • Lead congress communication planning and execution for major scientific meetings.

  • Lead development and maintenance of scientific platforms and evidence-based communication materials supporting approved and pipeline products.

  • Develop scientifically accurate, fair-balanced, and strategically aligned content for: Medical Affairs initiatives, Medical Science Liaison (MSL) teams, Advisory boards, Congress activities, and Internal training programs

  • Lead development of medical affairs booths, congress materials, scientific presentations, and executive-level communications.

  • Collaborate effectively with Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Translational Medicine, Biostatistics, Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Compliance, Commercial, and Executive Leadership.

  • Manage external medical communications agencies, publication vendors, freelance medical writers, and congress support vendors.

  • Establish clear expectations and maintain accountability for quality, timelines, and budget adherence.

  • Ensure all scientific communications are scientifically accurate, balanced, compliant, and consistent with applicable regulations and company policies.

  • Lead publication committee review processes and support Medical, Legal, Regulatory, and Compliance (MLRC) review activities.



  • Maintain expert knowledge of industry standards and guidelines, including ICMJE, GPP, ACCME, PhRMA, OIG, and GCP requirements.


Qualifications:



  • PhD, PharmD, MD, or DO in a relevant scientific or healthcare discipline.

  • 10–15+ years of biopharmaceutical industry experience within Medical Affairs, Scientific Communications, Clinical Development, or related functions.

  • Significant experience supporting oncology products, with direct immuno-oncology experience highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing publication strategies across multiple stages of product development.

  • Extensive experience leading publication planning teams and publication execution activities.

  • Experience developing scientific communication platforms, scientific narratives, and integrated data dissemination strategies.

  • Extensive experience supporting scientific congresses, including development of abstracts, posters, oral presentations, and congress communication plans.

  • Experience developing scientific content and training materials for Field Medical/MSL organizations.

  • Experience supporting advisory boards, scientific exchange initiatives, and external expert engagement activities.

  • Proven success managing external medical communications agencies and publication vendors.


 


The Base Salary Range for this position is $230,000 to $290,000. Coherus considers various factors, including professional background and work experience, when determining base pay. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary.
