Job Description - Senior Electrical Engineer

Company Overview:

Pronoia Energy is a pioneering deep tech startup at the forefront of quantum energy storage innovation. As a lean, mission-driven team, we thrive on rapid prototyping, cross-disciplinary collaboration and solving complex engineering challenges to turn quantum physics into practical, scalable products.

Our current focus is on developing our groundbreaking room-temperature macroscopic quantum energy storage technology that promises orders of magnitude greater energy density, faster charging, and higher power delivery as well as being cheaper and safer compared to existing battery technology. This represents a paradigm shift in energy storage with applications spanning consumer electronics, electric vehicles, renewable grids, and beyond.

Role Summary:

To meet our ambitious goals we are hiring a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead the development of our quantum energy systems. This is a leadership position in a high-stakes, high-reward startup environment where your contributions will directly shape the future of energy.

In this role you will dive deep into uncharted engineering territory, design and optimize complex circuits around our novel quantum material, guiding a small team through iteration to prototype.

You will be at the heart of transforming our quantum energy storage material into a fully functional energy system, handling energy interfacing, control, and optimization.

This role will include collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to tackle unknowns, with an emphasis on accurately characterizing the materials behavior and minimizing losses. As we scale, you'll also drive packaging and manufacturing strategies to bring this revolutionary technology to market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the end-to-end design and integration of electrical systems for our quantum energy, centering on the core energy storage material to enable efficient energy discharge, harvesting, storage, and controlled delivery to loads.
  • Develop and optimize circuits for key functions, including material interfacing, energy management, and system feedback to ensure stable, efficient operation.
  • Characterize the quantum material's electrical properties through high-precision measurements, simulations, and testing, identifying unknowns and providing data-driven insights to inform design iterations.
  • Optimize circuits for minimal losses, efficiency, and reliability, using circuit simulation software to model interactions, predict performance, and mitigate issues in RF power systems and power electronics.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., materials processing and physics) to communicate findings, refine material specifications, and iterate toward the first functional prototype.
  • Oversee battery circuit packaging, ensuring thermal management, robustness, and scalability while integrating quantum-specific constraints.
  • Drive the transition to production: design for manufacturability, scale up circuit components, and ensure compatibility with industry-standard battery form factors (e.g., cylindrical, prismatic, pouch cells) and performance metrics (e.g., cycle life, C-rate, safety standards).
  • Mentor a small team of engineers, setting technical priorities, fostering innovation, and promoting a culture of rigorous experimentation and problem-solving.
  • Contribute to troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and intellectual property development, including patents for novel circuit architectures.
  • Stay current with advancements in quantum electronics, energy storage, and high-power systems to evolve our technology roadmap.

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with proven leadership in complex hardware projects, ideally in energy storage, power systems, or advanced materials integration.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field
  • Deep expertise in circuit design (analog/digital), RF power systems, and power electronics for high-voltage/high-current applications.
  • Proficiency in circuit simulation tools (e.g., SPICE, LTSpice, MATLAB/Simulink) for modeling dynamic systems and optimizing performance.
  • Hands-on experience with high-precision measurements using instruments like oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and precision power supplies.
  • Strong programming and automation skills (Python, C++ etc) including experience automating testbench operation and data acquisition
  • Strong background in battery or energy device packaging, including PCB design, thermal management, and encapsulation techniques.
  • Ability to navigate technical uncertainties, conduct material characterization, and iterate designs based on empirical data.
  • Excellent communication skills for cross-team collaboration, with a track record of translating engineering insights into actionable improvements.
  • Thrives in a startup setting: self-starter, adaptable, and comfortable with ambiguity and rapid pivots.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in quantum electronics, power systems or closely related field
  • Experience with quantum technologies, such as quantum materials or devices, and their electrical interfacing.
  • Familiarity with current battery form factors, industry metrics (e.g., energy density, power density, charge/discharge rates), and standards (e.g., UL, IEC for safety and performance).
  • Background in scaling electronics manufacturing, including design for assembly (DFA) and high-volume production of power components.
  • Knowledge of feedback control systems and advanced energy management techniques in novel devices.
  • Prior work in deep tech R&D, with exposure to interdisciplinary teams in physics, materials science, or nanotechnology.

What We Offer:

  • Chance to solve one of the world's biggest engineering challenges and pioneer quantum energy storage.
  • Competitive salary, equity in a transformative startup, and performance-based incentives.
  • Access to cutting-edge labs, tools, and resources in a flexible, collaborative work environment.
  • Comprehensive benefits: health insurance, unlimited PTO, professional development stipend, and relocation assistance if needed.
  • A culture of innovation where your leadership will accelerate our path to market impact.

If you're excited to tackle this real-world quantum problem and build the energy systems of the future, apply with your resume and cover letter detailing relevant projects.
