While we remain committed to flexibility, this team\u2019s rhythm includes regular in-person connection to support collaboration, learning, and impact.\n\nThe Legal Department provides core legal support to all Dolby functions, runs several IP-centric businesses, and leads government relations.\n\nBased out of our San Francisco headquarters, and reporting to the Forensic Engineering Manager, the Senior Forensic Engineer is a key member of the technical team responsible for global compliance and enforcement. The role works closely with the IP Protection group to promote compliance and help prevent licensing and trademark infringement in the market. Responsibilities include strategic analysis of available information, guiding field audits and enforcement activities, and serving as a technical resource across the broader IPP organization and external partners.\n\nEssential Job Functions:\n\nProduct Testing and Analysis\n\n * Test consumer electronics, mobile devices, PCs, automotive infotainment systems, broadcast equipment, and software for use of Dolby technologies and potential infringement.\n * Conduct detailed forensic analysis, including teardown, component identification, signal\u2011flow tracing, and multimedia framework evaluation.\n * Analyze Android and iOS devices and applications for compliance with Dolby technology requirements and ecosystem standards.\n * Lead cross\u2011functional investigations into suspected infringement, coordinating with engineering, legal, compliance, and external partners.\n * Research, identify, procure, and test samples to detect infringement, validate technology usage, and gather intelligence.\n * Use AI\u2011assisted tools to support product classification, metadata extraction, pattern detection, and large\u2011scale data review.\n\n\n\nAudit Support\n\n * Pre\u2011audit analysis: Conduct strategic product and technology reviews of licensees and related entities, including cross\u2011sales diligence and ecosystem mapping.\n * Provide in\u2011person and remote technical support during audit fieldwork, including product verification, sample and specification testing, and technical guidance to auditors.\n * Post\u2011audit analysis: Perform detailed product testing and technology assessments to support negotiation, enforcement actions, and remediation planning.\n * Identify and implement process improvements, including automation opportunities, to improve accuracy, scalability, and efficiency across global compliance workflows.\n * Use AI\u2011enabled data analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and systemic non\u2011compliance across product categories and markets.\n\n\n\nTechnical Leadership and Cross\u2011Functional Enablement\n\n * Serve as a senior technical resource across the IPP organization, providing expertise on Dolby technologies, product architectures, and compliance risks.\n * Train compliance and audit personnel on Dolby technologies, forensic testing methodologies, and AI\u2011assisted analysis tools.\n * Support the development of team members through mentoring and technical review, as needed.\n * Support litigation activities related to technology and product analysis when required.\n * Collaborate with global compliance teams, auditors, and external partners to support consistent and effective enforcement practices.\n\n\n\n \nMinimum Requirements:\n\n * Bachelor\u2019s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.\n * Five or more years of experience in reverse engineering, compliance engineering, failure investigation, or intellectual property protection.\n * Strong working knowledge of audio codecs, multimedia frameworks, and consumer electronics architectures.\n * Experience with product teardown, hardware analysis, and identification of key electrical components.\n * Experience using scripting or automation tools (e.g., Python) to streamline analysis.\n * Familiarity with AI\u2011assisted analysis tools or demonstrated ability to adopt AI\u2011driven workflows.\n * Strong analytical skills, including experience with data analysis, trend identification, and large\u2011scale information review.\n * Ability to work independently across multiple projects with geographically distributed teams and communicate complex technical concepts to non\u2011technical stakeholders.\n * Ability to travel internationally on an occasional basis.\n\n\n\n \nPreferred Qualifications:\n\n * Experience testing consumer audio and video products such as TVs, set\u2011top boxes, mobile phones, tablets, PCs, or automotive systems.\n * Experience with software analysis, reverse\u2011engineering tools, or embedded systems debugging.\n * Experience evaluating third\u2011party intellectual property or technology licensing compliance.\n * Understanding of consumer electronics connectivity and signal flow.\n * Experience using AI or machine\u2011learning tools for classification, clustering, or anomaly detection.\n * Interest in music, audio/video production, recording engineering, game or film audio, or video technologies.\n\n\n\nThe San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $137,000 - $188,000, which can vary if outside this location, plus bonus, benefits, and some roles may also include equity. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
