Senior Mechanic - Internal Applicants Only

The City of Rockport is looking for an experienced and dependable Senior Mechanic to help keep our fleet running strong.

If you enjoy hands-on mechanical work, mentoring others, and taking pride in the upkeep of a city’s critical vehicles and equipment, this is the role for you! You’ll play a key role in keeping Rockport’s operations moving forward.

What You’ll Do:

As a Senior Mechanic, you’ll be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of city vehicles and equipment—from light-duty trucks to heavy machinery. You’ll also help guide and support fellow mechanics to ensure work is done efficiently and safely.

• Perform repairs on diesel, gas, and mechanical equipment.


• Complete routine maintenance, including oil changes, tire service, and battery checks.


• Diagnose issues using advanced testing tools and software.


• Weld and fabricate when needed; maintain a clean, safe shop.


• Maintain service logs and inventory of parts and supplies.


• Review inspection reports from departments and schedule repairs.


• Train and mentor Fleet Mechanics and delegate tasks as appropriate.


• Coordinate with the Fleet Manager on priorities and schedules.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent, plus specialized vocational or technical training in mechanics.


• 1–2 years of hands-on experience in vehicle/equipment repair or related role.


• Valid Texas Driver’s License.


• CDL Class A license is preferred or must be obtained within a reasonable timeframe.


• Experience with diagnostics, welding, inventory management, and preventative maintenance.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

• Work is performed in a garage and outdoors, including in varying weather conditions.


• Must be able to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, bend, and crouch frequently.


• Exposure to noise, grease, chemicals, and moving machinery is common.


• Use of protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and goggles is required.
