Performs laboratory testing and interprets test results using scientific knowledge and principles of test procedures and disease processes; recommends contingency testing.
Responsible for developing, maintaining and managing daily technical operations including staff training, implementation of instrumentation, accreditation readiness.
Project plans and timelines are developed with the Laboratory Manager approval.
Responsible for the immediate supervision and training, of laboratory staff and students in a 24/7 environment.
Ensures accurate orders for proficiency surveys and accurate submission of survey data.
Collects PI data, conducts analysis and documents progress.
Assist with current policies and procedures in department and ensures completion of electronic documents (RL6) according to established assignments and timelines.
Demonstrates fiscal responsibility.
Responsible for inventory and results review and any other tasks deemed necessary by management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
Assist laboratory managers with procedures and protocols
Ensure that accurate information and evaluation are provided for diagnosis and treatment of diseases
Provide continuous methods for identifying systematic problems inherent in area(s) of responsibility
Assist with ensuring compliance with all accreditation agencies and the associated proficiency testing
Train and supervise all technologists and technicians performing testing in area of responsibility, assisting the technologists and technicians with difficult procedures
Act as a resource for all lab testing in area(s) of responsibility
Perform unusual and/or more complicated test studies
Maintain QC and QA standards and follow-up variances
Assist with maintaining standards of accreditation in accordance with CAP, CLIA, AABB (Transfusion Services only), and HFAP
Assist with evaluating new reagent tests and/or methodologies regularly
Assist with writing and implement new/revised procedures and procedure manuals
Assist with providing in-services and training to staff, nurses, and physicians regarding departmental policies, procedures, requirements, and results
Perform the initial comparison studies, QC, linearity testing, and correlation for analytes and instrumentation in areas of responsibility
Assist with maintaining established department policies, procedures, and objectives regarding quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control, and interpret these to staff, patients, and the public as necessary
Assist with maintaining and care for all department equipment and supplies, including purchasing new supplies to maintain adequate inventory levels and storing extra materials in the proper manner
Assist with maintaining the department records (patient or other), reporting and filing as required
Assist manager with department readiness for accreditation inspections, data entry of survey results and clerical checks
Charge technologist for department in the absence of manager or director
Handles staffing issues, complaints and peer reports
Sends appropriate SBAR communication when needed for communication when events occur in the laboratory that effect the workload or turnaround times
Assists manager with turnaround time reports and other duties as assigned
Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care
Reporting Structure
Reports to: Core Lab, Blood Bank and Microbiology Managers
Supervises: 10 - 40 Medical Technologists, Technicians, Phlebotomists, and/or Transcriptionists

Education
Minimum Required Education: Bachelors of Science in a Medical Laboratory discipline
Experience
3+ years in a hospital with at least 200+ beds and suitably related service of equal tasks, tests, and volumes in a CAP certified laboratory.
Preferred: previous charge or lead technologist.
Certifications
Applicants must be a registered Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist
Must have current BLS certification or obtain within 3 months
