Position Summary
Incumbent will contribute to ongoing work in the Drake lab focusing on the ecology of emerging pathogen transmission and spread.
We are seeking an incumbent with expertise in spatial statistics or modeling to lead the development and execution of quantitative research projects applying spatial statistics to problems in infectious disease emergence. This incumbent will be needed to conduct independent research, prepare research plans, perform data analysis, draft internal and external reports on the performed research, and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Experience programming in R.
Prior research experience in the theory or application of dynamical systems, spatial interaction models (aka “gravity models”), spatial point processes, simulation, computational statistics, and/or geostatistics.
Strong communication skills as evidenced by a track record conference presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Prior experience making maps or using
GIS
is desired.
Physical Demands
Typical of someone spending most of the day at a computer. The individual will be needed to travel to/from buildings around campus for meetings – primarily in the vicinity of the Odum School of Ecology. Off-campus travel for research, conferences, etc. Driving to perform job related duties.

Duties/Responsibilities
Perform independent research focusing on modeling the transmission and spread of emerging infectious diseases. This incumbent will perform mathematical analysis of dynamical systems models and will collaborate with the PI to identify and contribute to the formalization of models for the spread and containment of a wide variety of emerging infectious diseases. Incumbent will be responsible for interpretation of mathematical results and will write computer code in the R language for numerical analysis, model fitting, model evaluation/validation, and data visualization.

Incumbent will be responsible for the dissemination of research results to both internal and external audiences, including drafting manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals; giving talks at local, national, or international conferences; drafting internal reports for project collaborators; and providing content for outward-facing websites for the lab, the Center for the Ecology of Infectious Diseases ( CEID ) and at least one of its working groups. Incumbent will serve in a supporting role to presentations by other investigators as directed by the supervisor or

Participate in lab meetings, Drake lab journal club, and lab-wide projects as needed. This could include participating in established working groups and/or providing assistance to junior researchers in the lab such as undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs.
