Job Description - Senior Safety, Health, and Environmental Specialist

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections,  where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

Join Roche's Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Department as a Senior SHE Specialist and make a meaningful impact on workplace safety and environmental stewardship. In this pivotal role, you'll identify and evaluate risks to employee safety and the environment while establishing robust controls to mitigate those hazards. Working collaboratively across the R&D department and throughout the business, you'll leverage detailed analysis, expert problem-solving skills, and extensive SHE expertise to protect our employees, our environment, and Roche's right to operate. Through strategic risk identification, comprehensive incident investigation and management, accident prevention, compliance management, and innovative program development, you'll help build and maintain a safe, compliant, and resilient workplace culture.

The Opportunity

As an expert leader with strong business acumen and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset, you'll demonstrate mastery in executing and evaluating SHE risk assessments—including job hazard assessments, equipment safety evaluations, PPE assessments, and ergonomic risk assessments. Your proficiency in interpreting regulatory and technical documents, combined with your extensive knowledge of industrial environmental management and emergency response procedures, will be instrumental in driving compliance and protecting our workforce. With a background in chemistry, electrochemistry, or microbiology, along with your demonstrated expertise in biosafety, bloodborne pathogens, and chemical hygiene, you'll bring the technical depth needed to excel in our science-driven medical device R&D environment.

  • Provide SHE business partner support for the R&D department of a dynamic medical diagnostic device company

  • Lead or facilitate investigation of SHE incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective and preventative actions to reduce risk of recurrence

  • Develop, review, and revise SHE programs through technical writing to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations

  • Manage action plans to ensure incident follow-up is complete, effective, and timely

  • Prepare, coordinate, and conduct regular SHE-related meetings, inspections, and training sessions

  • Maintain comprehensive SHE documentation, incident databases, injury and illness records, and required permits in accordance with compliance standards

  • Develop metrics, summaries, and communications to provide accurate and timely reporting of SHE-related data and trend analysis

Who you are

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, or related technical field with minimum 8 years of dedicated professional SHE experience

  • Extensive experience in highly regulated and science-driven industries (e.g., medical device, clinical diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, or R&D environments) with demonstrated expertise in executing SHE risk assessments and emergency response procedures

  • Demonstrated expertise in medical device R&D environments, including biosafety, bloodborne pathogens, chemical hygiene, and preferred background in chemistry, electrochemistry, or microbiology

  • Proven ability to autonomously manage complex SHE projects, lead incident response and management, interpret regulatory and technical documents, and develop business-wide SHE programs in matrixed organizations

  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with expert ability to manage complex workloads, deliver high-quality work with meticulous attention to detail, and work effectively on cross-functional teams with positive energy and sense of urgency
