Senior Sign/Zone Inspector (Planning & Development)

Position Summary

Enforces state and county animal control laws and ordinances in unincorporated areas of Shelby County.
 

Pay Grade: 54

Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education
 

Minimum Qualifications

• Ten (10) years of experience in building construction, five (5) years as a Sign/Zone Inspector.
• One (1) year in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of related education, training and experience.
• High school diploma or possess a GED, OR
• PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
   

Duties and Responsibilities

• Organize daily work and review and approve permits for processing.
• Investigate complaints requiring supervisor approval for final determination regarding code compliance.
• Monitor field inspectors to ensure department compliance standards and safety
• Review plans and confer with Plans Examiner when required for Code Compliance.
• Act in absence of Chief Inspector
• Assist Chief Inspector in all training needs of staff.
• Complete and Submit inspector performance reviews. 
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
   

KSAs

• Thorough understanding and knowledge of applicable related codes and ordinances
• Ability to organize, discipline, lead and direct field inspectors.
• Ability to make decisions and tactfully interact with disgruntled customers
• Ability to train inspectors when required.
• Ability to perform field inspections and investigations when required.
• General computer usage experience and skills.

Special Requirements

• Must pass a physical examination and possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license or secure one by date of employment.
• Must have access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
• Must be able to work various shifts including rotating weekends, on call weekends and or nights.
• Must be able to be in contact with the public at times under stressful conditions.
   

Physical Requirements

• Maybe be exposed to animals (dogs and cats), rodents, insects and deteriorating structures when conducting inspections.
• Must be able to walk long distances & stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to operate a motor vehicle for an extended duration of time daily.
• Must pass a physical examination.
