As a Senior Underwriter, you will be a pivotal member of our underwriting team, responsible for evaluating and approving merchant cash advance (MCA) applications to ensure sound financial decisions that align with our risk management strategies. Based in our Secaucus, New Jersey office, this role demands a deep understanding of business cash flows, receivables, and credit risk assessment in a fast-paced environment. You will collaborate closely with a small, tight-knit team to analyze applications, provide funding offers, and support business owners in accessing capital quickly and efficiently. This position offers the opportunity to influence key funding decisions and contribute to the company's growth by maintaining high standards of due diligence and compliance.
Review and analyze merchant cash advance applications, including business bank statements, cash flow data, and other financial documents to assess creditworthiness and risk levels.
Conduct thorough risk evaluations for requested funding amounts, determining whether to approve, adjust, or decline offers based on established criteria and company guidelines.
Collaborate with the funding team to prepare and present adjusted offers or counterproposals to applicants, ensuring alignment with business needs and repayment feasibility.
Monitor ongoing MCA portfolios, tracking repayment performance through automatic debits and identifying opportunities for renewals when a significant portion of the principal has been repaid.
Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, internal policies, and industry standards during the underwriting process.
Provide insights and recommendations on improving underwriting processes, risk models, and funding strategies to enhance efficiency and reduce potential losses.
Maintain accurate documentation and records of all underwriting decisions, supporting a transparent and auditable workflow.
Assist in training junior team members and contribute to team knowledge sharing on MCA trends and best practices.
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field; advanced certifications (e.g., CFA or equivalent) are a plus.
At least 1 year of direct experience in underwriting, with mandatory expertise in merchant cash advance (MCA) loans; candidates must have worked at MCA companies handling loans with terms ranging from 3 months to 12 months.
Proven track record in analyzing business financials, including bank statements, cash flow projections, and receivables, to make informed funding decisions.
Strong analytical skills with proficiency in financial modeling, risk assessment tools, and data interpretation.
Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple applications under tight deadlines in a high-volume environment.
Familiarity with automated repayment systems and experience in evaluating renewal opportunities for existing clients.
Effective communication skills for collaborating with internal teams and presenting offers to applicants.
Ability to work independently in a small team setting while thriving in a collaborative, results-oriented culture.
Must be based in or willing to relocate to the Secaucus, New Jersey area; this is an in-office role with potential for some flexibility.
This position offers a competitive base salary of $85,000 to $100,000 annually, commensurate with experience in MCA underwriting. Performance-based bonuses tied to funding volume and portfolio performance are available, along with opportunities for professional development and career advancement within our growing organization.
