Job Description - Senior/Staff/Principal Optical Engineer - Visualization Systems

Open Position – Senior/Staff/Principal Optical Engineer - Visualization Systems

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc.

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. is revolutionizing the world of surgical ophthalmology by developing a novel, AI driven, and  imaging-guided surgical robotic system. Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. aims to expand access to care, provide superior capabilities to the human surgeon, and enhance patient outcomes. Microsurgery in general and Ophthalmology are subfields of surgery for which the surgical outcomes can be significantly improved by robotic systems to allow superior dexterity, precision, accuracy, and visualization beyond the human surgeon’s own capabilities.

We are seeking highly motivated, detail-oriented, and intellectually inquisitive individuals looking to make a positive impact on healthcare via the development of robotic technology. The core values of Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. are:

  • Commitment to Excellence: We aim to deliver superior patient outcomes and surgeon experiences

  • Passion for Creativity and Innovation: We are driven by new ideas and aim to push the boundaries of what's possible

  • Teamwork and Camaraderie: We achieve our best when we collaborate and work together

  • Welcoming of Critical Opinion: We are enriched by constructive criticism and support the best ideas

  • Personal Accountability: We honor our commitments and take responsibility for our actions

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. offers:

  • An opportunity to build autonomous surgical robotic systems driven by image guidance and AI technology for the future of affordable, high-quality healthcare.

  • The opportunity to work alongside clinicians, engineers, and global leaders in cutting-edge AI, imaging, and robotics technology.

  • Competitive compensation and an excellent company-paid benefits package.

Opportunity:

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. is seeking an experienced optical engineer with expertise in complex imaging and illumination systems to contribute to a novel surgical visualization system for ophthalmology.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

As an Optical Engineer, you will play a critical role in the development of an advanced, multimodality ophthalmic visualization system. In this position, you will work closely with a team of optical, mechanical, electrical and software engineers to construct, evaluate and maintain novel imaging devices as part of a robotic surgery platform.

As part of our team, your core responsibilities will be to:

  • Participate in the optical and opto-mechanical design of a multi-modality surgical imaging platform, comprising a multi-channel digital microscope, complex incoherent illumination system and a state-of-the art swept source optical coherence tomography (SSOCT) system

  • Construct, align, calibrate and maintain advanced prototype systems and release candidates; work closely with electrical, mechanical, and software teams to ensure optimal system performance

  • Devise, maintain and execute standard operating procedures for construction, alignment and calibration of prototype systems

  • Construct and evaluate modular bench prototypes to demonstrate capabilities of the candidate designs

  • Gather feedback from early users and pilot studies, and work with product management and engineering teams to iterate on design

  • Operate within a quality management system to allow traceability and team-wide collaboration

  • Participate in DfM efforts to ensure system manufacturability and serviceability

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred: B.S.+10/M.S.+5/PhD+3 YOE in optical or electrical engineering, physics or a related discipline

  • Minimum: B.S.+5/M.S.+3/PhD +0 YOE

  • Experience in the construction, alignment and calibration of optical systems, both bench/lab prototypes and commercial systems

  • Familiarity with optical design tools (e.g. Zemax, Code V or OSLO)

  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g. Solidworks)

  • Strong understanding of practical aspects of optical systems, including opto-mechanical design and tolerancing (GD&T), coherence and statistical optics, and design considerations for selecting light sources (lasers, SLDs, LEDs), and detectors (high speed cameras, balanced photoreceivers, etc.)

  • Prior experience in working with Optical Coherence Tomography systems

  • Prior experience developing medical devices, and an understanding of quality management systems and design controls as applied to medical devices

Compensation:

Horizon Surgical Systems offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including medical, dental, 401k, remote days, unlimited PTO, paid maternity/paternity leave, and company holidays.

Base salary ranges (not including the equity and end of year bonuses)

  • Senior: 110k to 135k

  • Staff: 135k to 160k

  • Principal: 160k to 185k

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-tech startup that is revolutionizing surgical robotics in ophthalmology.
