Course: URB433H1F: Special Topics – Hip-Hop and the City

Course Description:

This course traces how hip-hop grew from house parties and DJ battles in the South Bronx in the late 1970s into one of the world's dominant cultural movements. While following the historical growth of hip-hop, the course utilizes the culture as a lens to understand critical urban issues of the 20th and 21st century. The course begins with a deep dive into hip-hop's origins in New York City, then moves to a thematic examination of specific issues. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, students analyze the work of major artists, explore how cultural, economic, and social forces drive urban change, consider how hip-hop can be a tool to advance positive social policy outcomes, and deepen skills for interpreting the music.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD and/or substantial professional experience in an industry relevant to the course; demonstrated teaching experience in related disciplines and course topics.

Brief Description of Duties:

Instructors will lecture on the themes of the course; prepare the syllabus and lectures; develop and administer grading, course assignments, tests and exams; mark and invigilate exams; hold regular office hours; oversee tutorials; and supervise teaching assistants. Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located.
