SHELVER

Job Title: Shelver

Responsibilities: The Library Shelver is directly responsible to the supervisor of the department in which he/she works for duties assigned by that Department Head. The Shelver works under supervision at those duties to which he/she has been assigned. 

Education: Youth must be able to obtain work permit if under 18 years of age. Adults must have a high school diploma from an accredited school or GED.

Duties:

  • Returns library materials to the shelves accurately and quickly.
  • Performs shelving tasks such as shelf reading, shifting and discarding materials, verifying materials and organizing carts.
  • Performs basic data entry tasks in a Windows environment, including (but not limited to) word processing, inputting or searching data in library ILS, using Internet and email.
  • Assists with inventory of materials.
  • Assists in the preparation of library materials for public use; including, but not limited to, affixing labels, repairing damaged materials, applying protective jackets.
  • Performs basic acquisitions procedures, including (but not limited to) checking in new materials and checking invoices.
  • Operates copiers and other library equipment.
  • Assists in locating materials for displays.
  • Retrieves library materials from outside book returns, when assigned.
  • Searches for missing, lost and claimed returned materials and pulls other items from the shelves as assigned.
  • Assists with shifting and reorganizing materials, as assigned.
  • Provides directional assistance, at patron’s request.
  • Performs other duties as required to facilitate good public service and efficient library operations.

Knowledge and Skills:  

  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to alphabetize and to place items in numerical order.
  • Ability to use and understand the library computer system and other related computer technologies.
  • Ability to work with others and to promote good staff and community relations
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability and willingness to follow and enforce library procedures and policies.
  • Must be able to lift and carry, push and/or pull 40 pounds, bend and reach.  
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
