Job Description - Shift Manager

SUMMARY

The Shift Manager at CLEARFORK ACADEMY is responsible for directly overseeing all Behavioral Health Technician and Milieu operations during their assigned shift. This includes ensuring efficient flow of all shift aspects even when not on duty. The Shift Manager performs their duties in a competent manner under the direction of the Director of Operations and manages the facilitation of all educational, recreational, and therapeutic activities. The Shift Manager ensures all Behavioral Health Technicians provide hands-on-care by observing and interacting with adolescents who struggle with substance abuse disorders and secondary mental health disorders as a result. The Shift Manager is responsible for scheduling, to include finding replacements, employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, and training of all Behavioral Health Technicians assigned to their shift. The Shift Manager reports directly to the Director of Residential Services and works closely with them to ensure all programming and staffing needs are being met. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages staffing for all shifts and communicates with Director on all staffing needs. Responsible for finding staff replacements, controlling overtime, PTO requests, and monitoring staffing needs based on census, to include sending staff home based on census and ratio demands. Creates and maintains a regular schedule for all Behavioral Health Technicians assigned to their shift. Notifies Director of any scheduling concerns and works with fellow Shift Managers to remedy absences. 
  • Approves payroll hours and ensures logged hours are correct, to include correct clock in and out times and lunch breaks.
  • Administers performance evaluations for all Behavioral Health Technicians on their shift. 
  • Conducts and monitors all training requirements for Behavioral Health Technicians on their shift. Mentors and develops subordinates through teaching, coaching, and mentoring. 
  • Works directly with Director to accomplish Clearfork Academy objectives. 
  • Maintains accountability of all assigned Behavioral Health Technicians, to include assigning Behavioral Health Technicians to designated zones or areas during their shift.
  • Conducts shift change meeting with incoming and outgoing Shift Manager, collecting all administrative data, briefing on the day’s events, any significant actions or activities, and any special precautions. 
  • Serves as a safety officer and ensures the safety of both Behavioral Health Technicians and clients is maintained constantly.
  • Schedules and oversees the transportation requirements for clients during their shift. 
  • Performs other duties and tasks as required.

  • Recognizes/respects concerns over interruption of work/plans/separation from family, etc.
  • Recognizes fears regarding potential lifestyle changes.
  • Encourages verbalization of fears and anxiety; maintains age-appropriate communication.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of developmental milestones of adolescents and young adult.

Requirements

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education, Training, and Experience Required:

Associate’s Degree in related field of study (preferred)

High School Diploma or one year of work experience.

1 to 3 years work experience as a Behavioral Health Tech, Recovery Advocate, Direct Care Staff, or Mental Health Technician (preferred)

Current Basic Life Support and First Aid certification (upon hire)

Current CPR/FA certification (upon hire)

Current Handle with Care Physical Holding Certification (upon hire)

Current Food Handler or Safeserve certification (upon hire)

Must possess a valid Class C Texas Driver’s License

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of industry standards as related to the position of Recovery Advocate.

Professional readiness: Issues related to self-awareness, diversity, ethics, and continuing education.

Knowledge of PC and Mac software programs, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

 Written and oral communication skills; must be able to concentrate on work amid distractions such as noise, conversations, and foot traffic.

Must maintain self-control in volatile or hostile situations such as when verbally or physically confronted in an aggressive manner.

Must be able to work independently with little direct supervision in an unstructured environment with multiple demands

Ability to represent the program well in interactions both inside and outside the facility.

Demonstrates an understanding of the developmental milestones of adolescents and young adults.
