Shipping and Identification Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:

Individual works within Superior Thread Rolling Co. Quality Management System (QMS) and procedures guidelines in product identification and Shipping. Identifies, packages, protects and arranges shipment of various machined parts per traveler and shipping document instructions. Exercise considerable independent judgment in organizing in the Shipping department. This position also serves as a cross-trained backup to the Identification and Packaging Technician, and may be assigned to work in either the Shipping department or the Identification and Packaging department as business needs require. This position is a fast paced, high visibility and requires great attention to detail while performing under pressure, and, multitasking.  Duties and responsibilities may change to meet the needs of the business and at the discretion of the Supply Chain Manager.

Daily Job Functions to Achieve Goals:

1. Responsible for greeting customers and all personnel at the Shipping Desk.


2. Prepares items for shipment (Domestic & International), using various freight carriers.


3. Maintains shipping photographs of all shipments by
   
   
   
   • Taking photographs of packaging configuration
   
   
   • Downloading photographs to network location
   
   
   • Renaming files to reflect Part Number and Packer #
   
   
   
   


4. Assures completed material is ready for shipment to customer within the ship date identified on the packing slip and/or as communicated.


5. Examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet specifications and product is packaged in a manner that will protect it from damage during transit.


6. Inserts items into containers, using spacers, fillers, and protective padding.


7. Interprets engineering drawings, customer specifications, industry standards, and schematic diagrams, and confers with QA or engineering staff when a discrepancy or question arises.


8. Operates identification marking equipment as required, including dot peen machine, electro chem-etch, vibro engrave, stencils, rubber stamp and permanent ink, and heat sealer, in support of the Identification and Packaging Work Center.


9. Assembles cardboard containers or selects preassembled containers.


10. Fastens covers on wooden crates with nails and/or screws using power tools.


11. Fastens large containers with standard grade steel strapping using Steel Tensioner strapping tool.


12. Determines method of shipment, utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates.


13. Use various freight carrier software and barcode systems to generate applicable shipping documents and labels.


14. Ensure the proper commercial and customs invoices accompany each shipment.


15. Affixes shipping labels on packed cartons identifying shipping information on cartons


16. Operates forklift trucks or uses hand-truck to move, convey, or hoist shipments to and from delivery vehicles and shipping/receiving to storage or work area.


17. Loads materials to customer & freight delivery vehicles using the company forklift.

1. Organizes (6S) all Shipping, Identification, and Packaging areas and ensure shop cleanliness


2. Maintain a 48hr monthly average cycle time through the Shipping and Identification Work Centers.


3. Records all direct and indirect labor performed using the ERP system and traveler to work on jobs and indirect codes for other related duties.

Weekly Job Functions to Achieve Goals:

1. Maintains inventory of shipping/identification materials and supplies.


2. Maintains all identification and packaging equipment.

As Necessary:

1. Assume various other duties as delineated by the Supply Chain Manager.


2. Occasionally receives and identifies parts, supplies and tooling from customers and freight carriers.


3. Identify and act upon areas of needed improvement.


4. Assist with all other quality functions by teaming up with other employees.

1. Assists with product identification as needed.

1. Becomes thoroughly familiar with STR customer identification and packaging specifications as delineated in STR process and technical documentation (e.g. traveler, DS sheet, etc.) in order to serve as backup to the Identification and Packaging Technician.


2. Assist and/or train in any aspect of identification, preservation, and packaging when assigned to float or backup the Identification and Packaging department.

1. Routes items to other departments.


2. May be required to drive the company truck for pickup and delivery from time to time, and to act as a backup driver as needed, including covering routes and delivery/pickup schedules in the absence of the primary driver.


3. Assist in other QC related duties such as but not limited to:

• Receiving, visual inspections, and help in identification/packaging etc

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

• High School Diploma


• Must be thoroughly familiar with Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, Outlook and common freight carrier software programs).


• Must have a high regard for attention to detail and take ownership and pride in their work


• Multitasking ability is a must for this position.


• Must be organized and manage time effectively to meet fast paced demands.


• Must speak, comprehend, read & write English fluently.


• Valid California driver's license, without major traffic violations, to support backup driving duties as needed.

Desired:

• Shipping and receiving experience in the aerospace industry experience is desired.


• Bi-lingual in Spanish desired.


• Experience with Computers and Avery Label software desired.


• Experience operating identification/part-marking equipment (dot peen, electro chem-etch, vibro engrave) is a plus.


• Prior forklift operation experience/certification is desired.

Physical Demands:

The employee is required to:

• Stand, walk, push, pulls, reach overhead and bend to the floor.


• Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or


• Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or


• Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Licenses Required: CA State driver’s license Class C, without major traffic violations. DMV driving record report (H6) is required at interview.
