About Us

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is the state government agency created to conserve and sustain the state’s fish and wildlife resources through research, scientific management, wise use and public input. The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina’s fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The agency has an operational budget of approximately $100 million and employs approximately 700 full-time staff and 100 seasonal temporary staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, and customer service, information technology and administrative professionals. The NCWRC Mission is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation.

Description of Work

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a Wake County Shooting Range Specialist (Program Coordinator I) for our Wildlife Education Division.

The Wildlife Education Division is responsible for raising public awareness about the agency, its mission, and its programs. The Division aims to engage and influence individuals through education and various opportunities, encouraging them to actively participate in the conservation of the state’s wildlife resources. The Division develops and delivers education programs focused on hunting, fishing, and shooting sports, along with other conservation outreach initiatives. With educators located throughout the state, a dedicated fishing education center, and several shooting ranges, Division staff actively engage the public by providing outdoor skills training and educational programs that promote the conservation of North Carolina's wildlife and habitats. Additionally, the Division implements program planning and evaluation to ensure ongoing participation in conservation and wildlife-related recreational activities aligned with the agency's mission and purpose.

The Wake County Shooting Range Specialist provides effective guidance and management for the agency’s partnership shooting range with Wake County. The Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center (WCFETC) is an indoor shooting range facility that, through a partnership with Wake County, is open to the public for recreational shooting opportunities. Tasks will include, but not be limited to, the following:

• Assist with the daily operations of the WCFETC through assisting with the scheduling and daily operations of the team of Range Safety Officers (RSO).
• Day-to-day operations of the shooting range, including managing the reservation system, overseeing user sign-in operations, providing excellent customer service, and ensuring safe, effective facility operations.
• Responsible for scheduling the Range Safety Officers, ensuring ammunition and other safety inspections and briefings occur for the visiting public to ensure effective and efficient operations of the facility
• Complete and maintain certifications and training deemed necessary to ensure safety measures are maintained for range operations
• Train temporary staff and volunteers in the range’s safety and standard operating procedures

A modified schedule is associated with this position, which involves working 40 hours per week (Sunday, Monday, Friday, and Saturday, with a flex day either Tuesday or Wednesday). An individual in this position is required to work every weekend. This position is based in our Wake Co. Firearms Education & Training Center located in Apex, NC.


RECRUITMENT RANGE: $39,244 – $50,000

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures of shooting ranges, to include firearms instruction, facility management, customer service and recreational shooting programming.
  • Experience managing a team/unit, to include team building, leadership, and volunteer management.
  • Experience in building successful working relationships with local entities and organized groups, to include partnership development and support.
  • Effective interpersonal, presentation, and public speaking skills.
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
