Description

The Engineering & Shop Mechanic is a hybrid role ideal for individuals with strong mechanical aptitude and foundational knowledge of engineering principles. This position is responsible for performing diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on construction trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, and jobsite machinery—both in the field and in the company shop. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable troubleshooting hands-on mechanical issues as they are interpreting equipment specifications and design-related adjustments. This role is essential to ensuring equipment reliability, operational safety, and regulatory compliance with DOT, OSHA, and Florida labor standards. The mechanic plays a critical part in minimizing equipment downtime, supporting fleet readiness, and optimizing overall operational efficiency across field and shop settings.

Requirements

  • Perform diagnostics and repairs on diesel and gas engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatic components.
  • Performing repairs and maintenance on various mechanical equipment, potentially including pipe fitting, HVAC maintenance, welding, machining, or other craft skills. 
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles, trailers, and construction equipment per manufacturer and DOT standards.
  • Respond to field service calls for emergency repairs or breakdowns on job sites.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe shop conditions while performing repairs.
  • Track service records, inspections, and parts used through written logs or digital systems.
  • Install and retrofit equipment and safety devices in accordance with engineering specs.
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections and assist with DOT compliance documentation.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to prioritize repair schedules and coordinate equipment availability.
  • Follow all company safety protocols, PPE requirements, and Lockout/Tagout procedures.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; technical or vocational certification preferred      but no required
  • Minimum 3 verified years of hands-on mechanic experience in construction, diesel, or heavy      equipment repair
  • Familiarity with diagnostic software, multimeters, and calibration tools
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs, crouch, stoop, and work outdoors in varying      weather conditions

Work Environment:

  • Work performed both in a controlled shop setting and outdoor job sites
  • Exposure to construction noise, dust, grease, and industrial machinery
  • Standard workweek may include overtime or emergency calls as needed
