Job Description - Shop Superintendent - Night Shift / Monday-Thursday (4:00PM-3:00AM)

ABOUT THE COMPANY


SC Steel, LLC was established January 2, 2018, as a subsidiary of FabSouth and acquired the assets of SMI-Owen Steel Company, Inc. on April 1, 2018. SMI-Owen Steel Company had owned the business since 1994 when they acquired it from South Carolina Steel Company. The Upstate South Carolina facility has been in operation at this location since 1952.



JOB OVERVIEW


The Shop Superintendent provides overall leadership and direction for multiple production areas within the facility. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality output across all stages of the fabrication process. The Superintendent manages a team of supervisors and employees, overseeing daily operations, workforce development, and continuous improvement initiatives to meet organizational goals and customer expectations.


 


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Production & Operations:



  • Oversee raw material handling and machining (CNC, saws, drills, etc.), ensuring accuracy and efficiency.

  • Manage all phases of fabrication including fitting, welding, painting, and final loadout of structural steel assemblies.

  • Monitor and adjust production schedules to meet project deadlines and customer requirements.

  • Maintain high quality standards, ensuring work meets or exceeds customer specifications and AISC/industry standards.



Safety & Compliance:



  • Champion a “safety-first” culture; enforce OSHA and company-specific safety standards.

  • Ensure supervisors conduct regular safety audits, toolbox talks, and incident investigations.

  • Maintain compliance with environmental and quality management systems.



Workforce Development:



  • Partner with HR/Workforce Development to train and advance employees’ technical and leadership skills.

  • Support skill progression programs for welders, fitters, machinists, and additional production personnel.

  • Participate in recruiting, onboarding, and retention efforts as needed.



Continuous Improvement:



  • Drive process efficiency by implementing Lean Manufacturing and 5S best practices.

  • Identify and resolve bottlenecks in workflow, manpower allocation, and equipment utilization.

  • Recommend capital improvements for equipment, tools, and facilities to enhance productivity.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



  • EDUCATION / TRAINING: High School Diploma or GED; Technical degree preferred

  • EXPERIENCE: Minimum 7–10 years in steel fabrication, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership/supervisory role.

  • TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE: Strong understanding of machining, welding, fitting, and overall structural steel fabrication processes

  • LEADERSHIP: Proven ability to manage supervisors and large, diverse teams (50+ employees).

  • COMMUNICATION: Clear communicator who can work across all levels of the organization, from shop floor to senior management.

  • PROBLEM-SOLVING: Skilled in troubleshooting production issues, resource planning, and quality concerns.

  • Quality: Focus on quality issues and errors and take the lead for eliminating the root causes for in-shop error

  • Production Planning: ability to plan the day for the department based on reasonable estimates of the amount of labor in each batch of work

  • Communication:

    • Conduct weekly crew meetings that focus on safety, production planning, quality, and company policies and culture

    • Conduct Daily Toolbox talks

    • Weekly meetings with Plant Manager and other supervisors

    • Daily communication with other supervisors including:

    • Production status – including warnings when the production plan is not being met

    • Batches of work available for fabrication
