POSITION: Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) Interviewer/Rater- Pool Position 

LOCATION: Talladega, AL

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind and multi-disabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 30,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

As an SLPI Interviewer/Rater, you will play a critical role in upholding this mission by ensuring high-quality, accessible communication across our organization. In this role, you will be responsible for directly interviewing and rating applicants and staff members according to the rigorous standards of the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI). Working both independently and cooperatively with the SLPI team, you will analyze linguistic skills, collaborate on final scores, and write comprehensive reports that directly impact professional development and organizational excellence.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. 

  • Three years working with individuals who are Deaf or DeafBlind using American Sign Language (ASL). 

  • Possess a sign language proficiency evaluation of ADVANCED PLUS upon employment. 

  • Must meet suitability/background requirements for employment 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in related fields. 

  • Minimum of 1 year teaching ASL or working with ASL students. 

  • Already trained to be a SLPI Interviewer/Rater. 

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

Essential Duties

  • Candidate Assessment: Conduct live interviews with candidates and perform thorough video-recorded analyses to evaluate their sign language proficiency using the SLPI rating system.

  • Team Collaboration: Work closely and communicate effectively with the SLPI rating team and the SLPI Coordinator to align on scheduling, review processes, and finalized rating scores.

  • Deadline Management: Efficiently manage timelines to complete candidate ratings and submit final documentation to the SLPI Coordinator within established deadlines.

Skills & Qualifications

  • ASL Expertise: Possess thorough, advanced knowledge and hands-on experience using American Sign Language (ASL).

  • Training & Certification: Must actively participate in and successfully pass the official SLPI Interviewer/Rater training program.

 

Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB. SALARY:  PH-1    $33.85 per hour
