The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is a department of the City and County of San Francisco responsible for the management of all ground transportation in the City. The SFMTA has oversight over the Municipal Railway (Muni) public transit, as well as bicycling, paratransit, parking, traffic, walking, and taxis.

APPOINTMENT TYPE: Temporary Exempt: This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of this appointment shall not exceed 24 months.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The SFMTA oversees all transportation modes for the City and County of San Francisco, including the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), bicycling, walking, on-street and off-street parking management, and taxis. Under supervision for one of these projects, a Sign Worker fabricates, installs, repairs, inspects, and maintains a variety of signs.

The Parking and Curb Management section within the Streets Division is facilitating projects to manage parking demand, make safety improvements and to support our Transit First Policy.

Full-Time TEX position not to exceed two (2) years:

• Muni’s Stop Branding Project involves the installation of new standardized signage at every bus stop covering route, accessibility, and multilingual information.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Transports equipment such as signs, poles, ladder, tools and safety equipment to job sites using a maintenance or bucket truck.
• Reads and interprets written and technical instructions related to fabricating and installing signs.
• Fabricates signs using computer and plotter, and cuts lettering and symbols; lays out and prepares signs for installations and drills in and on buildings, on streets, and parking garages and/or various other locations.
• Installs and maintains bike racks; pours and breaks cement and digs holes using power tools such as: gas run cement breakers, power drills, core drills, electric band saws, rivet-guns, drill presses, and impact wrenches; use hand tools such as: saws, wrenches, ratchets and sockets, center punches, hammers, screwdrivers, sledge-hammers, levels, tape measures, shovels and trowels; cement mason tools; and hand tools such as: saws, wrenches, ratchets and sockets, center punches, hammers, screwdrivers, sledge-hammers, levels, tape measures, shovels and trowels.
• Installs into ground and repairs poles or posts using tools such as: tamping bars, chipping bars, pole-straighteners, and post-hole diggers.
• Attaches signs to poles, posts or other structures using tools such as: banding tool, band-it, brackets.
• Ensures that all installations meet safety codes.
• Removes graffiti and posted materials from signs using chemical solutions; and/or applies architectural graphics on/from spaces, in and around buildings.
• Maintains records of signs installed and inventory of signs and equipment in stock; works on a laptop and/or handheld computer in the field and office to access the daily assignments and completed workorders in the sign tracking database; fills out forms detailing work orders, emergency assignments and incident and/or accident reports; and prepares reports of work accomplished.
• Performs related duties as required.

NATURE OF WORK: 

The nature of work involves physical effort and manual dexterity in the use of the fingers, limbs, and body; working independently; interacting with the public; working from heights such as ladders or lift bucket trucks while carrying tools and heavy materials; working under hazardous conditions including working in congested, busy traffic areas, and inclement weather. Employees are required to lift and carry objects weighing up to eighty-five (85) pounds. Employees may be required to work weekends, overtime, and rotating schedules.

Minimum Qualifications:

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Education:

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (General Education Diploma or California High School Proficiency Certificate.

Experience:

One (1) year of verifiable experience in the operation of power tools such as: power drills, electrical band saws and cement breakers

License and Certification:.

Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently under strict and tight deadlines.
• Ability to interact effectively with other City departments, external agencies, and the general public.
• Ability to work independently.
• Proficiency with basic computer applications such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Access, and/or other database software.
• Strong experience in the construction field.
• Experience in the installation of traffic control devices.
• Experience in fabrication of signs, including utilizing sign making software.
• Experience working in diverse teams.
